The Future Depends on what we do in the Present

“The Future Depends on what we do in the Present” -Ghandi

What a brilliant statement . It cuts right to the core of the issue, and it reveals exactly what separates the ‘haves’ from the ‘have-nots’.

In this case the “have’s” are those people who have changed the way they look and feel and the “have-nots” are the ones who complain about how they look and feel.

So the next question is…what determines what you do in the present?

Let me back up for a second, because it’s really important that you get this – that you understand it and internalize it.

When you want something, you have to take action to get it, right?

But there is a gap between your desire, and your action…

Something has to happen in between in order for you to get your butt in gear.

What is it?  What is that ‘thing’ that happens to close the gap?

It’s decision.

You have to decide to take action. That’s what closes the gap…and that what determines your destiny.

Anthony Robbins said it best…

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”

So, with this understanding you now have the life-changing STRATEGY.

Consider this…

You want to lose weight.  You know that will require taking some form of action.  You decide to exercise for 30-60 minutes a day and eliminate simple carbs from your diet.

The first day, you work out for 30 minutes and eat “properly”.  Same on your next day.  On the third day, a scheduling conflict comes up. You have to decide between your workout or this other thing (whatever it is). You decide to blow off your workout.

That my friends, in a nutshell is what separates the ‘haves’ from the ‘have-nots’.

You decide on how your life will be…..

I decided that I didn’t want to be 212lbs….and I lost the weight by deciding to take action–I was tired and miserable being fat.

Just decide to make a change….

It’s your decision to lose weight, it’s your decision to improve your health and it’s your decision to make your health
a priority.

Show up to boot camp–make the decision to take time for your health and fitness.

Energy Drink…not for my kids

I receive a few emails every week asking about my opinion on Sport/Energy drinks for kids. So to clear the air here is what I have put together for everyone’s benefit.

We can’t really equate adult’s dietary requirements with nutrition for kids. The physiology of a growing child varies to a certain degree from that of a fully grown up young adult. Kids belonging to different age groups from adolescent to teenagers have particular nutritional requirement. What with obesity sweeping across North American kids, we have to sit up and do something about it sooner than later. If you can’t throw out all the junk food like burgers, hotdogs fries and colas, then you can at least start cutting back on them slowly at first, until no junk is left at the dinner table for your active sports loving kids.

The sports drink and energy drink manufacturing industry has started targeting kids as young as four years old, in their quest to expand their market. However, you as a parent must consider all aspects and gather as much information about such drinks available in the market. Most of these drinks contain too many carbohydrates, caffeine and electrolytes and sometimes multivitamins and unspecified herbs….thats just a scary combination if you ask me.

They are advertised to provide extra boost of energy and strength but are heavily laced with sugar, which is detrimental to kid’s health, affecting weight and also puts them on a fast track to the dentist’s chair for sure. The essential content of all these drinks is a heavy dose of sweeteners for hydration and endurance, but is not necessary for kids, as they can be kept properly hydrated with plain water, natural fruit juices and proper healthy food.

Another culprit with too much sugar is the soda, which should be avoided at all cost, if the kid is not to go overweight and suffer from other obesity related diseases. Energy drinks like Gatorade and other leading brands contain as much as three times the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee. Caffeine as such is not suitable for children and causes disorientation, attention deficit, aggression, irritability and lack of concentration. As soon as the effect of caffeine wears off, the aftermath is more unpleasant for kids and they may get addicted to caffeine in the long run.

Some vitamin waters are also being sold as a supplement and they may not be beneficial to children for the fact that too much vitamin beyond recommended daily allowance will do more harm than good. Not enough studies have been done on the effects of caffeine and multivitamins fortified with herbs and minerals on children to declare them safe and beneficial to kids.

Psychologically too the kids on such sports drinks may consider their performance to be the result of such drinks and may not practice more or work harder to improve their game, which is what it really takes to excel in sports and activities. Instead of sports drinks, try some home recipes and throw together some homemade healthy beverages as proper nutrition for kids.

Learn a few simple smoothie recipes and try to combine as many fruits and vegetables as you can into the blend to have a balanced nutritional drink to meet all the requirement of a growing child. Combine fruits like bananas, blueberries, strawberries, apples, oranges  and whip up a drink the kids will find hard to refuse.  Here is a bonus to it…let them create their own with some help from you and they will more likely drink them and if your kids are anything like mine…they’ll be asking all the time to make them.

Cut down on sodas and sugar laced drinks, ice creams and sundaes, doughnuts and pastries, burgers and pizzas, to watch your kid glow with health. Knowledge of proper nutrition for kids is not to be taken lightly by parents, if the next generation is to be brought up healthy, wealthy and wise.

Want the facts?

Time to get back on track.

The only time we fail is when we quit.  The only time we give up is when the journey seems to be more than we can take.   If you think you can’t keep going call me…I’ll carry you when you need the extra support.

If you let yourself down, don’t worry…just don’t repeat it.  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again.  (love that saying).

Here is some inspiration for everyone.

“FriYay the 13th” Amy’s Edition

Hey everyone!!

Today is Friday the 13th, 2010….otherwise known as, “The day Amy is getting married!!”  Just think how far she has come since first starting Boot Camp.  Two years ago on Friday the 13th, she would have been jumping on a motorcycle heading down to Port Diver, eatin’ sausages and drinking beer.  (She was not the same as she is now).

Today….she will be walking down the aisle, marrying the man of her dreams and eating veggies with champagne.
Show Love
Never ever let love diminish from your lives. So what if you are busy with work and handling three jobs at a time? You are married to your beloved, not your work. Often people feel neglected as they feel their partner does not love them the way they used to. Even if it means saying a simple “I love you” with quick peck, make you sure you do it everyday. It works wonders and keeps you together even through the toughest times.

Don’t Nag
You have to understand that every person has a limit of tolerance. Once you push the person beyond that level, trouble occurs. Don’t keep nagging your partner to do things the way you like to. Just because you are married to them does not mean they can’t think or do things their way. Just say what you have in mind and wait for your partner to respond. You will be surprised to see the results.

Respect your Partner
Need we really explain this one? You give respect, you get respect. Don’t forget he/she still has an individual identity, despite the fact that you are a couple. Respect your partner’s feelings and you will have much more years of happiness in your life.

Resolve Fights
Never ever leave fights or bitter arguments for the next time. Resolve your arguments and fights then and there. Do not be hesitant to say “sorry” if it is your mistake. You will see how easy it is to resolve fights and forgive each other and truly forget it. Do not bring up old issues, as it will unnecessarily complicate an already delicate situation. It is better to forgive and forget than fret forever!!

Communicate
Talk to each other as much as you can. It helps to bring two people closer and you get to understand each other better. Look at it this way. Some of the most amazing conversations you can think of have taken place with the one you love.

Be Faithful
In order to keep a relation alive, you have to have faith and trust in your beloved. No one is perfect and you have to accept the other person just as he/she accepts you, with the positives and negatives. There is a very thin line of difference between trust and faith and it is very important to trust your partner and have faith in yourself to keep the relationship going.

Compromises
Everyone is required to make compromises at some point in life. It is not possible to have everything that you desire for, at the expense of someone else. You have to adjust to make yourself and your partner happy. Rest assured that when time comes, he/she would go out of way to make you comfortable.

Take a Break
Allot one day in a week that you will devote just for the two of you. It could be every Sunday and it need not be anything extravagant or too mushy. Just be with him/her for an entire day even if it means helping her with the dishes or watching a game with him.

Special Days
Whatever you do, do not forget important dates. Remember birthdays and anniversaries. They are special days and every year they add another milestone to your relationship, reminding you that there are many more happy days to come.

Do Not Underestimate
Whatever your partner does to make you happy should be valued. Never underestimate the value or effort of your partner. It gives a bad face-off to your relationship. Just make your partner feel important and special, and you would be sailing on the ship of a happy marriage all your life!!

Always Go To Boot Camp

No explanation necessary!!

The Good Old Days – Part 2

In part 1 we talked briefly about how a couple of generations ago grandma cooked with sugar, fat and salt.  There was no such thing as low-fat, sugar-free or heart friendly labels.  But somehow, people were healthier then.  Sure, you can argue that we live longer today and we are more aware of health and fitness concerns now.  Think about it though….heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity (child and adult)…they are all increasing at horrific rates.  We know more than ever before, we have more low-fat, heart healthy and whole grain choices than ever before, so what are the differences?

The basic reason we are living longer is medical science is keeping us going beyond what our expectations were a few years ago. But let’s be truthful about it. Grandma and all her friends used to exercise more than we do now.  They walked everywhere, they used to do laundry by hand, hang clothes on a line, walk to friends homes.  The modern conveniences that we enjoy now didn’t exist a generation ago. Kids didn’t spend countless hours in front of a computer playing games.  They went outside and actually threw a ball, ran on a field and played games with real people.

When we sit around and don’t exercise we tend to eat. That casual eating can cause over eating to occur.  When we over-eat, our stomachs stretch. When that happens, we feel hungrier and then over-eat again to feel satisfied.  Then the vicious cycle starts. It takes more and more food to feel satisfied.  Couple with that the lack of exercise you have a big problem.  Grandma could get away with eating foods that by today’s standards are ‘unhealthy’.  Grandma would laugh at us now and remind us that;

“Our foods weren’t chemically engineered.  They were grown.

Our exercise didn’t come from machines that move us. We actually moved ourselves.”

There were no ‘AB-doers’.  A ‘Perfect Push-Up’ was done by your own good technique.

If you want to do everything you possibly can to avoid disease, maintain a healthy lifestyle and  be strong, there are four simple steps you need to follow. 1.) Eat food that is beneficial to you. 2.) Challenge your muscles with resistance. 3.) Do sensible cardio-vascular exercise. 4.) Get adequate sleep.

Oh, yeah…and don’t eat or drink any crap!

Quick and easy healthy breakfast idea

What do you do with left overs on a Saturday or Sunday morning when there are many mouths to feed?

Breakfast Burritos!

This morning while I was running the team through the paces at Boot Camp, . He did a combination of (great turn out and awesome energy by everyone today BTW), DH was at home making breakfast for the troops.  He took care of cleaning out leftovers and putting together a nutritious meal.

This is what he used, but make your own ingredients based on what your family will eat.

8 Wraps (multigrain)

12 eggs

2 cups spinach (leftover from salad)

1/2 green and 1/2 red peppers diced (leftover from salad)

Ground Turkey (leftover from Turkey Tacos)

Goat Cheese (crumbled)

Wilt the spinach and combine in the same pan the peppers and Turkey.  Once warmed add the eggs and stir until cooked.  Serve in the wraps with Salsa, Guacamole, your own fav topping or nothing at all.

Fast, simple and helps clean up, without throwing out food.

Bon appetite!

The good old days

Do you know why we eat?  How about what food really does for our bodies?  Well, the simplest reason behind our eating is to satisfy hunger.  Hunger comes from deep down inside of us.  Our ancestors would answer this hunger by going out and hunting their food, killing it and dragging it back to the cave to serve it up with some roots and berries from a nearby field.

Now when we get hungry, we walk to the fridge, grab whatever, cook it up (Microwave) and bon appetite!

Foods now are genetically engineered, modified and injected with mass amounts of chemicals to help it grow faster to get to our tables matured sooner.  With all of that processing three elements will almost always be present that make our mouths water.

Sugar, sodium and fats perfectly blended to make what is called, ‘mouth appeal’.  When companies get this combination right, we drive out of way to hit their drive thru windows, their extended lineups and over priced products.

In our grocery stores; low-fat, sugar-free and reduced sodium are all the buzzwords on every store shelf that you walk by right now. But have you ever asked yourself, “Lower than what, sugar-free? or sweetener free?, reduced from what to what?” We take for granted that we are being sold healthier and more fit conscious foods.  At the same time, society is getting bigger and bigger.

Two generations ago our grand parents made just about everything from scratch.  Sugar, fats and salts made everything taste better.  People then, were healthier than they are now. (Less heart disease, cancer, diabetes, joint replacements, arthritis, etc.) We just have better medicines and drugs to keep our failures at bay.  People ate to supply their bodies with energy.  Just like the cave man did.

We used to eat unhealthy (by today’s standards) but we also used to walk everywhere.  We made things without conveniences.  Can you imagine what it’s going to be like for our grand children.  They won’t even have to get off the couch to get their food.  It will be created out of their iPad 10th generation.

Maybe we need to get back to the old days.  Not quite as far back as our caveman ancestors, but going back to making foods that aren’t processed, salted to death or sugared to make your mouth water.  Using today’s healthier foods like whole grains and natural sweeteners to make a great taste…you know…the taste of food, remember what that was like?

Make your food, don’t buy it.

In Part 2…over eating ->the vicious cycle and exercise -> the lost skill.
