The Four Pillars of Fitness

What I do falls into a few categories….trainer, nutritionist, motivator, event planner, meal planner, Dr, therapist…..(OK, I only play those last two at boot camp. I don’t have the letters behind my name in real life).  In reality, I consider myself a “Fitness Professional”.  There is a huge difference between a personal trainer and fitness professional.

A client recently sent me a thank you email for helping her get through the pain she has lived with as a result being overweight.

I specialize in helping people lose weight and get in shape.  Essentially what I do helps take away
pain.   There are many forms of pain that can contribute
to you not feeling at your best.

Physical pain - Things hurt and when they do there’s usually a reason why.  In a lot of instances, carrying extra weight hurts joints, support structures and a recurring injury and any extra weight isn’t helping.

Emotional pain - This really hurts.  Living with the pain of not being happy with how you look and or feel.  Often hiding that pain with a false smile, an overly bubbly personality to mask how you really feel.  Often times, this results in both weight gain and physical manifestation of pain in the muscles, and joints.  It’s very difficult to have energy for your day, and your body seems to just want to rest.

Psychological pain - You might (or should I say “you likely are”) torture yourself with your own thought process.  You’re constantly second-guessing yourself, feeling sad or upset, and emotionally beating yourself up.  This is when people typically turn away from exercise and that’s when things get bad and physical and mental pain sets in.

Spiritual pain - When in conflict with our own morals, value systems, and beliefs, we have a very hard time excelling at anything.  This is a very interesting, and powerful, connection.  Our bodies insist that we are in sync with ourselves or we deteriorate.  Our muscles waste, we gain fat, our joints start to hurt, and our energy plummets.  Plus, the world just seems harsher.

This is what you need:

Physical Fitness:  You need to move, end of story. Challenge your body, release good endorphins that actually make you feel better!  Combine those with the fact that you will start reversing those things that are causing you physical pain.

Emotional Fitness:  Accept what you have and change that which you can.  Stop making excuses.  Often the things you think can’t be changed will remedy themselves through other wholesome changes.

Psychological Fitness:  Stop beating yourself up.  You are only perpetuating a bad situation.  Positive thoughts will help here immensely!

Spiritual Fitness: Honesty with yourself, honesty with others and balance in your life…these will put you in better alignment for progress.

I’ve witnessed time and time again that when all 4 of these areas improve and you “heal” yourself
through exercise and movement, you are unstoppable in all areas of your life…that is powerful!!

We have to teach your muscles how to get back on track.  When this happens the pain drops, your body feels incredible and then you will start to shed the fat. When you take a break from exercise or fall off the wagon you put your mind and body thru pain.

How do I know? I’ve been there.  I looked in the mirror and was miserable with what I saw.  I hurt physically, emotionally and mentally from what I let myself become.  I created a cycle of disbelief and excuses.  I put on the happy face to cover up the pain.  Then I took control.  I set my goals.  I exercised.  I focused on the positives and before I knew it…I was where I truly wanted to be, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually.

Join me..it’s great!!

Let me help you.

Could you please pass the Dimethylpolysiloxane?

With my nutrition coaching clients, I try to build in a “cheat meal” into their plan. Call it a once a week meal where anything goes.  I make it clear that it is a “free meal”.  Not a free weekend or a free day to go on a food bender…it is A SINGLE MEAL!
I tell them to save that meal, bank it if you will, for the occasions that you have plans to go out to dinner, a birthday or anniversary, get together with friends.  Use that free meal to eat what you have secretly craved all week.  Eat it and get it out of your system.

A couple of things usually happen.  They eat the forbidden food and find out that there was really no satisfaction/gratification from the meal that they thought they would have. They were pining away all week for this one “treat” and, nothing.  The other thing that happens?  This meal doesn’t often sit well in the stomach.  Go figure…healthy nutrition, to general garbage down the pipe and your body reacts!  Funny thing is, many people tell me that their “treat” is french fries.

I came across an article detailing the real info on Wendy’s “natural” fries.  They are supposed to be a “healthier” version.  Healthier deep fried potatoes…really?? Healthier than what?

This is what the article said:

“The fries are sprayed with sodium acid pyrophosphate, a chemical that prevents them from turning brown from two baths in frying oil – one at the factory and one at the store.  They are also dusted with dextrose, a sugar derived from corn, for similar purposes.
And just like every other fast food chain, Wendy’s frying oil is dosed with dimethylpolysiloxane, a silocone based chemical that helps the vegetable oil from getting foaming after countless rounds of frying”

AND that my friends is what you are dumping into your body and your children’s bodies.  Think about that for a minute.  Your “treat” is a chemical science experiment…..how yummy is that???

The point is simple.  Eat foods that nourish you.  Not foods that become a science project.

Eat real food…is it really that hard?
Why poison yourself or your kids….because that is what it is…..you are not “treating” yourself or you kids.

Stop putting some kind of emotional value to crappy food. Eat real food and move towards having endless energy.

Do you even know what dimethylpolysiloxane is???  Why on earth would you feed it to you or your kids???  Would you hand them a can of oil with a straw and say slurp away???

Think before you eat.

Focus Friday

Why is it the when the weekend comes a lot of people fall jump off the wagon?  Some people throw the rules out the window in terms of their good food and exercise goals.

“I’ve done so great all week, I’m going to treat myself.  Just a little something special.  A few drinks with friends, maybe some dessert. I owe it to myself.”

That mentality is NOT #WINNING (Hey what can I say, Charlie’s in town). That is an attitude destined for failure.

The truth is the damage you decide to do on the weekend often sets you back so far that you end up working all week hard just to get back on track.  At best you battle those extra calories just to break even.  You don’t get ahead.  You waste positive results gained from Monday to Friday just to blow it up on Saturday and Sunday.  Then they wonder why the scale isn’t moving.  Frustration sets in, self-doubt creeps up and then…the towel is thrown in and they give?

Sound familiar? Am I talking about you?  Well, remember; I’ve been there, I’ve done that, I’ve felt the same way.  So, I offer you this advice from experience.

Decide!

  • Decide right now as you are reading this that you are going to take charge of your health.
  • Decide that you will not go on a food bender
  • Decide that you will grocery shop for healthy food
  • Decide that on Sunday you will make a few meals for the week ahead
  • Decide to exercise
  • Decide to treat your body with respect (eating junk is totally disrespectful. You might as well eat dog food-most fast food is dog food grade meat–think about that for a sec)
  • Decide that your health is your foundation. Without your foundation you have nothing to support you.
  • Decide to be a role model for your children / family
  • Decide and commit to your goal
  • Decide that food cannot fill some emotional gap

Focus

  • Focus on yourself
  • Focus on what will make you healthier
  • Focus on what will help you get to your goal
  • Focus on your goal
  • Focus on people who will support and encourage you, not those that want to take you down and tempt you with food so you can be miserable like them.  Yeah, I said it, you know who you are.
  • Focus on getting endless energy

Get fired up about your life!

It is after all what you make it.  You can be sad that your clothes don’t fit or you can be focused on getting to your ideal size and making them fit!

If you know anything about me, you know I am cheering for you right now (wooooooohoooooo).  I want you to be healthy.  I want you to be happy.  I want you to get excited about life. I want you to be the healthiest and BEST you possible!

Decide and focus!

Let me know if you need a few more wooooooohoooooo’s to keep you going!!!

Announcing my diet book!!

I want to blog about this again, because I think some people read the words but have trouble putting it into action for themselves. Trust me…if you chose to follow this, I guarantee you are going to make the process of achieving your health and fitness goals easier.

I get asked a number of times daily via email, Facebook, Twitter, “What do you eat”

I am happy to tell everyone what I eat.  I eat real food.  Surprise!!  Mystery over, the cats out of the bag!!

I know that so many of us struggle with weight issues. I’ve been there.  I have walked in your shoes.  I was a size 16/18 and I was over 220lbs.

So when I tell you I know how you feel; I really do!  I know exactly how mad you feel when you try clothes on and they are tight.  I know how jealous you feel when you see someone skinny eating cheesecake and you secretly wish a wardrobe malfunction on him or her.  (Button on their skinny jeans shooting across the room comes to mind!)

Add ethical to this search and it drops to 30 million

It seems like there is an endless supply of diet books and each claims to be the last diet book you will ever need.  Dr’s, trainers, celebrities, coaches, former athletes, the mailman all try to capitalize on “their” idea of a “diet”.  The sad part is most don’t work!!!  You know this and I don’t need to tell you that.  Simmer down, I can hear you say “Carrie, my friend’s aunts best friends cousin did the “so & so” diet and she lost 20lbs”  Ok…yes, you can lose weight on some diets. But, go back and see them in a couple of months.  The term yo-yo comes to mind.

So, I’m going to write my diet book…right here, right now!!  Here it is. Eat real food in proper amounts.  Support great nutrition with responsible exercise and sleep.  Book done. Look out New York Time…here I come.

I know I won’t be getting a book deal anytime soon because what I am telling you requires an effort!

I know you are busy; we all are.  But, you have to make meals.  Pre-packed ‘food’ products are not going to work.  You have to exercise.  End of story, yes have to!

It all comes down to how bad do you want it??  How bad do you want to be healthy?  The alternative is being sluggish and unhappy.  Is not fitting into your clothes working for you?

Excuses; I have heard them all…..and then some.  If you have an excuse why you can’t make meals or exercise, I am here to support you.  I am here to help you, show you the light or give you a shake up and say wake up!

Real food is nourishment, it’s energy, it makes you energetic and strong. Processed food, makes you hungrier, tired, moody.  Which option sounds better to you?

Why are you punishing yourself by eating junk. That is what it is…punishment.  If you think that cookie or the chips or ice cream is a reward or treat…you are soooo wrong.  Once you get your head around that…you are off to the races!!

Here are some boot camp food rules to live by:

  • don’t go longer than 3hrs without eating
  • drink at least 3L of water daily
  • exercise daily
  • protein must be at every meal
  • say good-bye to processed foods (cookies, chips, bagels, fast food, frozen dinners)

Do the work see the results.

This is what I ate today:

  • coffee
  • chocolate/pb protein shake + apple (breakfast)
  • hard-boiled egg with cucumber slices + couple of walnuts (snack)
  • chicken breast with tomato sauce and salad (lunch)
  • yogurt with mixed berries and slivered almonds
  • early dinner before boot camp – tuna in yellow pepper cups(cut up pepper filled with tuna)
  • after boot camp – mixed berry protein shake
  • chamomile tea
  • 3.5L water

What did you eat??  Whatever emotional value you put on food, change it.  Food is fuel.  Eat smart and watch your body change.

Stop making excuses why you can’t and start making steps towards why you can!  You are where you are because of the choices you have made.  You will be where you want to be because of the choices you will make.

I have lost over 200lbs – I have been where you are!  Now trust me and come and be where I am now!!

Be the best you!

“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” ~Thomas Jefferson~

If you are like many busy people you usually take care of everyone else but yourself.  You are putting your needs behind everyone the needs of those around you, but….at what cost?

You might notice that you have said things like, “Once hockey is over I will get back to exercising”, “As soon as I get that new job (or whatever) I will start working out and eating right.”, “When the nice weather returns I’ll get back to exercising.”

Maybe you’ve start noticed that you have less and less energy.  Things that once were simple or “easy” are now requiring real effort.  It might seem that you “woke” up and wondered how you gained that 25lbs?

The neglect of your personal well-being could take place over weeks, months or even years.  If you are sick or your body can’t handle exertion than what good are you to those that you have put before your own health needs?

Everyone has the ability to feel energetic.  Everyone should have energy each and everyday.  You have the right to put your health and fitness needs at the forefront of your life.

When you have energy, you can do anything.

When you feel energetic you usually feel more creative.  Things you do are more fun, your relationships are healthier.  Your thoughts are clear and can lead to action.  You are enthusiastic about life.  You feel confident, unstoppable, fearless.

Who doesn’t want to feel like that every single day????

Take care of yourself.  Be healthy, make the changes you know you need to make. Stop making excuses…make changes!

Go from good to great.

Be amazing, not average!

Vote to fight fat…election 41

Congratulations to Stephen Harper and the Conservatives for adding fitness to the Canadian Election platform.  Naturally I’m in full support of it…but wish that our politicians could see past the ends of their polls and recognize the potential they have in their hands to make a real commitment.

Here’s what they have said.  The Conservatives will double the child fitness tax
credit from $500 per child to $1000 and create a new tax credit for adults, which will be $500 dollars per adult.

Here is part of the story from the Toronto Star.  Click here for the article

Tax filers get a 15 percent break with the credit, meaning that those claiming the full $500 would get a $75 break. Officials say the credit would apply to sports league registrations and gym memberships, though an expert panel would be convened to decide all the specific activities that would apply for tax relief.

There is a cost of this program…it’s estimated to be about $275 million for the adults and about 30 million for the expansion of the kids program.

Sad news…the new adult credit won’t be instituted until 2015-16 when the federal books are balanced and the expansion of the children’s credit will come in ‘sometime over the next four years’.

My suggestion to the politicians…THINK.  Think about the benefits of getting Canadians active, which I am sure this credit will help allow some to do.  Think about a healthier country.  Think about the spin-off benefits:

  • Mobility challenges in aged population reduced
  • Heart disease reduced
  • Cardio-vascular problems reduced
  • Stroke reduced
  • Diabetes reduced
  • Obesity reduced
  • Mental focus increased
  • Healthy diets increased
  • Healthy lifestyle increased

All of the above will translate into:

  • Decrease demand on health care system
  • Decrease demand on insurance benefit payouts
  • Decrease demand on social medical care system
  • Increase employment opportunities in fitness industry
  • Increase worker productivity
  • Increase tax dollars

I’m not a politician or a financial professional…but anyone can figure out a healthier society will end up creating tax revenue for the country.

So please Mr. Harper, modify your tax credit plan to start immediately.  The benefits are obvious and the money that it will cost over the next few years will pay off exponentially when there is less financial demand on health care and more money coming into the public purse!

There is no guarantee that the public will ever start taking care of themselves even with a financial incentive to do so.  But there sure is a guarantee that the cost of everything being fat and unhealthy imposes on society will continue to rise if something isn’t done about it.
