Pitty Party for 1

I want everyone to read this and post it in a place that you can look at it.  Use it as a reminder that everyone has a story to help them feel sorry for themselves and we all have something to complain about.  Don’t be that person. Be the person who rises above the problems of day to day life and kick your them to the curb and yell at the top of your lungs, “NEXT!”

We all have problems/issues.

Things aren’t always perfect but more than anything you are in a better position than most people. If you can’t change your situation then work with what you have.

You complain about your weight but remember that you can fix that.  It’s in your control.  You can make the change…but will you??

I find it amazing and awful at the same time that people are so quick to tell you what is wrong in their life other than to speak of what is good in their life.
We all have more good than bad going on.  Attitude of gratitude people...get it!
If you start to focus on positive things then more positive things will happen and you will be grateful for what you have.  Not miserable for what you don’t.

Your attitude and mood is all controlled by you.

Be thankful you have your health.   If you are not in good health, YOU NEED TO CHANGE THAT!

  • Be thankful for the family you have.
  • Be thankful if you have a job and a roof over your head.
  • Be thankful for your spouse and your kids—many don’t have either.

Yes, at times they are the people that can drive you from zero to crazy in 30 seconds–but be thankful that you have them!

It isn’t hard to change your attitude.

Smile more, be helpful, appreciate what you have.

(Insert cliche here, “Take time to smell the roses.”)

There will be bad days but there is something good in each and everyday.  So pull your head out of your &$# and start living a happier life….it really is that easy.

Never say you “can’t” when you really can!

Cravings…arrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!

Cravings.

It’s almost a dirty word.  It sets off such emotion. We all have them and we all deal with them differently.

The triggers to these cravings are endless.  Hormones, TV,  commercials, watching other people eating something, listening to other people talking about food, emotions….and on and on.

I have a few tactics that I use to help me stay on track to battle cravings.   Tactics?  Oh yes tactics.  This is warfare my friends.  Get your armour on.  It’s go time!

Tactic #1 Brush your teeth
This will kill a craving in its tracks.  Food tastes weird right after you brush your teeth. The benefit of doing this is twofold.  You clean teeth and kill the craving. Make sure you brush your tongue and inside your cheeks as well for an even stronger effect–weird I know, but try it!

Tactic #2 Chew some sugar-free gum
This is simple and it works. The chewing takes your mind off of the craving. There are now dessert gums. Sugar free and that will help with any post meal cravings for sweets.  Try it!

Tactic #3 Drink like you live in the desert
Most people are dehydrated and end up mistaking hunger or cravings for actually being thirsty. Water is magic…seriously!  Not only does it quash your cravings but it helps your metabolism.  Double whammy.  Boo-yah!!!
Now, I know many of you are rolling your eyes about me mentioning water, AGAIN–but if you read my blog post about sweeteners, I use Crystal Light to help get in my allotted water and have lots of options for flavours.

Tactic #4 – Chew on this….
Fibre…this will help battle those cravings by slowing down the absorption of sugar.  Aim to get 30 grams of fibre each and every day.
Here are some great high fibre foods that you can easily incorporate into each meal:
-apples 4 gm of fibre
-broccoli  7gm in 3/4 cup
-blackberries 7gms per cup
-beans   6gm in 1/2 cup
-oatmeal  7 gms 3/4 cup
-peas 9 gms in 1/2 cup
-strawberries 4gms per cup
-raspberries 5 gms per cup

Tactic #5 Zzzzzzzzzzz
At night cravings go sky high….that is when you need to shut ‘er down.
When you are tired you make bad choices.  If you see that you get into the habit of snacking at night.  STOP IT!!
Go to bed early and you will feel so much better!!!

Use these 5 tactics and crush those cravings!

8 Energy Essentials

Everyone wants more energy, right?  I’ll let you in on a little secret here…Your supply of energy is endless!  That’s right it is!  And I DON’T mean your energy is  fueled by some over caffeinated and sugared drink that tastes like cough syrup.  Yeah, I’m looking right at you Red Bull.  I’m talking about a way to ensure that you have endless energy in a healthy and responsible way.

There are some rules that I follow which are essential to having and keeping my energy high.

Before I go over my high energy life rules, you ALWAYS have to keep in mind that the amount of energy is totally up to you!

1- First and foremost, your level of energy is a decision. You decide each and every day how you are going to feel. If you let people dictate your energy you will always be looking for “that extra energy”.

The mind and body are connected and if you repeatedly say “I’m tired”, guess what, you will have convinced yourself you are tired.

Decide the moment you open your eyes in the morning that you are going to have a ton of energy.  I guarantee if you program your mind to start your day saying that you are going to have energy to burn, you will!!

2-Real energy requires real food.  If you eat junk you will feel like junk. Choose power foods.  Food is fuel.  Fuel your day with premium foods.

High energy people respect their bodies and love having energy and would not trade that for chips or cookies or any other crap.

3-Energy creates energy.  If you want to have more energy then you need to kick your pal Debbie Downer to the curb.  If you hang around high energy, positive people, you’ll start to feel the same.  If you are around people who are lazy and negative it rubs off.  Choose your peeps wisely! (This ties into point one as well.)

4-Protect your energy.  Stay away from the energy suckers.  You know the ones, their cup is half empty and the sky is falling.  Those people can drain you and suck every bit of energy from you.  I am all about inspiring and motivating others but there are some that can’t be saved….so move along and don’t try!

5-Sleep is essential for energy.  Your body needs to heal, recover and recuperate. By running on 4-5 hrs of sleep a night does not make you a rock star (unless you actually are a rock star)

Sleep helps your body stay strong.  Turn in earlier and aim to get your 7-8hrs a night.  Oh and for those of you who are about to say, “Well I’m used to getting four hours of sleep.  It’s how I’m programmed.”  You are kidding yourself.  Sooner or later it will catch up with you in a big, bad way.  Stop it and get more sleep.

6-Words have power.  Speak with enthusiasm.  Speak with a smile on your face. If you are monotone or speak with a ho-hum attitude your body will respond the same way.  Your body and your body language affect your energy.  So pep up your tone and inflection and stand up straight and stop slouching! Oh yeah, SMILE! It’s infectious to you and everyone around you!

7-Energy requires expending energy…physically. Getting your blood flowing, heart pumping, muscles firing creates energy.  If you sit all day and don’t exercise you get tired and lethargic and claim to have “no energy to workout”  Fit people thrive on expending energy and get fired up after each and every workout.  Exercise is essential for keeping your energy up!!

8-Best energy drink on the planet……water. Don’t believe me, try it! Feeling tired, low energy-drink water–trust me!
Not only will water keep your energy up but it will also do this. <-(Click the word this).

Are artificial sweeteners OK??

Are artificial sweeteners OK??

This is a question I get all the time.

Now I know everyone has his or her own opinion on this subject.

My pop loving peeps will say that sweeteners are ok and others will scream from the mountaintops that you will get brain tumors.

I have heard it all; Artificial sweeteners will give you cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, tumors, brain bleeds, ADD, ADHD and the list goes on and on.

The targets of this controversy go by the names of Aspartame, Saccharin, Sucralose.  If you can’t remember the names, you’ll probably know them by these…yellow, pink and blue packets.

Fact or Fiction: Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer

Fiction: In the simplest of explanations, there is no evidence that sweeteners cause cancer in people.

Fact or Fiction: Artificial Sweeteners Cause Neurological Damage

Fiction: There is no evidence that sweeteners cause neurological damage. So, I can no longer blame my adult attention deficit disorder on my artificial sweetener consumption, I will say that there is some information coming out that supports the possibility of chemical dependency-food addiction.

Fact or Fiction: Carrie uses Artificial Sweeteners

Fact: I drink Crystal Light and similar products, and I do have the occasional diet pop. For me, if I get a sugar craving, I might have a diet pop. It works for me and I would rather do that then go and inhale a chocolate bar.

I also colour my hair, wear makeup, breath polluted air and have been known to drink tap water which are all highly toxic.  So I’m rolling the dice.

What I recommend is simple.  Always choose real over fake.  Have tea or water as your primary beverages. Don’t be a pop junkie.

What I find funny is that people get all up in arms about artificial sweeteners but have no problem sucking back a bottle of wine. What’s even funnier is the justification I hear from those said wine drinkers.  Uhmmm, I’m pretty sure that your liver is taking a good beating trying to process that alcohol which is sugar.  So not only are you working on your addiction you’re also putting your body through toxic spill internally.  Oh yeah, that’s nice!!

Drink responsibly people.

If nothing changes……nothing changes.

Everyone knows what they “should” be doing but only very few actually do it, and by “it” I mean exercise and eat properly.

It’s time to make changes.

  • Time to plan your meals and COOK THEM
  • Time to schedule in your workouts

Things will come up that will derail your from your plan, but you need to dial into your ninja stealth moves and be able to recover and stay on track.
(Oh yes, I just said ninja stealth moves! LOL)

Meetings come up, kids get sick, traffic happens, you forgot your lunch.  The list of “didn’t plan on this happening goes and on and on…

Bumps in the road are bumps in the road.  They do not give you a  licence to eat whatever is quick or easy.  It’s not permission for you to skip exercise.  You really need to be stronger than your excuses.

Being healthy is not a punishment…it is a reward!

Exercise and eat smart.  That’s all I’m asking for.  It’s prevention.  It is going to help you live a longer, happier and healthier life.

Think about this for a sec.  How many people do you know that have health issues and for them, it’s now too late.  TOO LATE.  Don’t become that person or statistic.  Not when you have the ability and wherewithal to take control.

You get through one day at a time. You set goals, real goals (specifics please!), not fluffy, obscure goals (i.e. I will lose weight).  You say, “I will lose 10 pounds by April 1st, be able to do 10 more pushups”…etc.

Those days you just aren’t feeling up for a workout.  Show up to boot camp.  I guarantee that you will leave feeling happy and proud of yourself that you did it!

Even Disney suffers the effects of bullying

Imagine if you will, a child is on the street running back and forth between moving cars.  He is jumping in front of cyclists, buses, cars and people just walking.  There, on the sidewalk is his mother; ignoring the obvious danger her son is putting himself in.  In fact, a driver stopped his car and told the mother that if she didn’t stop the boy, he was going to die.  The mother was incensed!  How dare this man tell her how to raise her child?  How dare this obvious “do-gooder” point out the shortcomings of her parenting abilities?

It went so far that the mother sued the man claiming that she embarrassed her and caused her to suffer depression.  There were other mothers that joined the lawsuit creating a class-action lawsuit against the man, claiming that no one has any right to try to protect any child from their parents.  A parent has a right to allow their own child to kill itself and no one can stop their bad parenting.

Seems completely impossible for this to happen doesn’t it.  This is political correctness run a muck.  This is ultimate in stupidity.  This is what is happening all around us.  No, not this exact situation, but this premise that we can’t tell the truth because we are so afraid of offending someone.  We can’t tell it like it is because some ‘expert’ has said little Johnny will suffer low self-esteem for the rest of his life.

Well, this week, I was floored when I read that my favourite place on earth had also fallen victim to political correctness.  The greatest company on earth gave into the outcry of a few at the cost of many.

Disney threw in the towel on a great program, “Habit Heroes”.  The attraction hadn’t even received full-blown release yet, and it has been closed. The program was a direct hit at child obesity using exercise, healthy choices and the always popular good versus bad as Will Power and Callie Stenics would have battled such evil beings as “The Snacker”, “The Glutton” and “Lead Bottom”.

"If you're smart, I'm broke. Don't educate yourself about fat loss."

So who complained? Weight loss surgeons and fat-acceptance groups! So, who has the most to lose by children learning proper nutrition, exercise and healthy choices…that’s right weight loss surgeons.   And if everyone learns how to be healthy and control their weight through exercise and nutrition, who will be left on the outside looking in? Fat-acceptance groups…what the hell are “fat-acceptance groups”?

Fat-acceptance?  I accepted that I was fat when I was a teenager.  I would look at myself in the mirror and make excuses about why I was the way I was.  I would lie to myself.  I would tell people around me I was happy and ok with myself.  The reason I did that was because who in the world wants to admit, they are happy being fat!!??  Hold on, I know…people who are too friggin’ lazy to do what it takes to lose weight.  People who are too lazy to make a real meal because its easier to go buy fast food and chips than it is to cook a meal and cut up veggies.

“The attraction is currently closed as we work to further refine the experience,” Kathleen Prihoda, Disney’s media relations manager, told Yahoo on Wednesday. “Our goal with Habit Heroes is to make sure it conveys a positive message about healthy lifestyles in a fun way.”

Well, in my humble opinion Kathleen, that is exactly what Disney had in it’s new Epcot exhibit.  So bring it back, unchanged and ready to teach with the truth.

Fat is expensive to all of us.  Fat is not healthy.  Fat impacts quality of life.  Offended by fat education?  Then move right past the exhibit, keep waddling right on over to find a funnel cake with ice-cream, syrup and sugar and all the finest fixins’.…they are incredible and will satisfy any binge needed.  No need to stop at any of those silly healthy restaurants that serve salads and vegetables.  Fresh produce…oh the horror if your children saw you doing something that was good for them.  In fact…why don’t you threaten to sue restaurants that have healthy choices because a skinny smiling child seated next to you and your “fat-acceptance” family could be disturbing to you and your precious “little” herd.

Was that harsh? You bet it was harsh but this crap has me fired up.  This is political crapness.  Where do I get to complain that my rights and feelings are being hurt?  Oh yeah, and I have the right to voice my opinion on this subject.  I’ve been on the obeses (not fat) OBESE side of the fence and NEVER would I tell skinny, healthy, fit people to conform to accepting fat.  I wanted to be able to conform to the world of healthy!!

Disney did it’s homework.  Disney had a solid partner on the program.  Disney doesn’t go into any thing without doing it’s due diligence, research and testing.  So what happened this time?

I just don’t get it! What’s next…a new Disney Princess to appease the massive?  I can see her now, Princess Porker in the Land of Lard.

On a side note…I’ve read lots articles all with polls on the subject.  I’ve cast my vote on everyone and guess what?  100% of the polls show that Disney has made a mistake and should put the exhibit back AS IS!

Here are lots of articles about the cancellation that was to have opened today!

Are you eating this poison? You might be surprised.

Think there are short cuts to losing weight??  Magazines, tv ads, infomercials, are always telling us that they have a short cut.  Ummmm no…sorry.  There are NO short cuts.

If you are looking for ways to cut corners so you can lose fat fast then you will be very disappointed and bigger, probably with other health risks. You can’t and let’s be honest, you know that.

The real deal is that you HAVE to move and by move that doesn’t mean just stroll on a treadmill or walk the dog. You have to move, and challenge your muscles.
You have to eat REAL food. There are some amazing foods out there that will help you lose weight, and give you energy; drumroll please…

…lean sources of protein, veggies, fruit, ( green face ).

Yes, I know a bunch of you just rolled your eyes.  Exciting!!  Yeah!! Well, it all depends on how you look at it.  I don’t think its exciting carrying extra weight, stressing over the clothes that don’t fit, or being so tired that you can’t do anything.  To me, that’s not exciting, but to many people out there it must be!

I think its pretty exciting that I have energy to burn and that I am not riding a blood sugar roller coaster.  I eat for energy. I think that real, healthy food is cool!

Your food should be what gives you energy.  Your food should be as close to the way nature intended it to be made as possible (although I do love seedless watermelons and I know that isn’t how nature intended it).  You are the result of what you put in your body in many ways.  Put crap in long enough, you look and feel like crap.   On that note, here is something else to think about…

I’ve talked about this before but it’s so worth repeating; be careful of hidden dangers in your “food”.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFS) is basically a sweetener that is produced from uneatable corn.

This ***poison*** is completely horrible for you and the worse part is …

(wait for it)

…high Fructose corn syrup is in almost every processed food you eat and the foods you feed your kids!

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is processed very differently in the body than other sugars and thus has different effects.  Recent research has shown that high fructose corn syrup leads to:

  • Abnormal increases in body fat (especially in the abdomen)
  • Directly linked to increased incidence of diabetes
  • Consumption directly correlated with increased obesity rates
  • And like I said, it is found in almost everything (see the list below).  I avoid this stuff like the plague.

I eat real food (non processed)  that contains ZERO HFCS.
High Fructose Corn Syrup = BELLY FAT
Here is a list of food with high levels of HFCS:

Jelly: Smucker’s, Welch’s, many others
Syrup: Aunt Jemima Original Syrup, other fake syrups
Pop: Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7Up, Dr. Pepper
Power Drinks: Gatorade, Powerade
Juice: Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail, Minute Maid Products, Most “fruit drinks”
Barbeque Sauces
Bread (nearly all high-volume brands)
Ketchup
Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup
Salad Dressing
Ice Cream (any cheap store brand)
Frozen and refrigerated products aimed at kids:
Popsicles
ice cream treats
juice boxes
Candy
M&Ms
Caramels
Twizzlers
Lollipops
Hard candies
Gummy Bears
GumBalls
Jelly Beans
