Friday Fitness Funny

We should all head into the weekend laughing. Hope this helps you with that.

Glad you called it like it is!

Unless you consider running a marathon the distance from the TV to the Fridge

and have shiny jewels, well behaved children and lots of shoes!

Is Dr Oz starting to be like Jerry Springer?

Oh CANADA, Happy Birthday

Long weekend time here in Canada…we will all proudly wear red and white to celebrate Canada Day. Some of you might celebrate a little harder than others and to those of you I say , “Simmer down.  You’ll only regret it come Tuesday morning!”

So…Dr Oz is on my radar. I will start by saying, I like Dr Oz. I think he is what we would all love to have as our family physician. Down to earth, relatable, fun, fit, etc.  I’m starting to take issue with the show. It is a television show and that being said, it needs advertisers, paid promotions and ratings.  I get that.  It’s big business. It is sometimes at the sake of the public though.  The premise of the show is to provide an educational forum for viewers on health topics/issues.
I am starting to see that The Dr Oz show is at risk of becoming the “Jerry Springer Show” for weight loss fads.  ”Lets just keep bringing out the next outrageous act.” Before you start jumping down my throat, hear me out in this, stay with me and let me explain.

Every week, there is some new product he is promoting that is great for weight loss.  Every week, week in and week out for a few years now Dr.Oz has been providing information to get the population thinner, fitter, healthier.  Here’s the kicker.  The population is still overweight and by every account, getting bigger!!

People believe him because he is a “Dr.”

I know he believes in a total body approach.  How can he not? Look at him.  But most people want the quick fix and will run out and buy/try whatever supplement that is “hot” and not heading the advice of healthy eating and exercise.  The magic potion, lotion, pill or toy.

If I told you how many emails I get a week from people who ask about products that have been on the Dr Oz show you would be shocked!

This week for example, he was highlighting the virtues of tea.  They featured three different kinds of herbal teas that claim to help with weight loss, cravings, metabolism, etc.

Here is where I have to take issue…People will watch the show, see to healthy/fit people swilling back these herbal teas and think, “I’ve got it!! There’s my answer to losing weight!”  They will rush out and buy these teas and start drinking them while still eating crap and sitting on the couch watching Dr Oz.  Then they will do it for the next supplement they see, and so on.

Dr. Oz has not cracked the code to weight loss because he has not motivated the nation to cut the crap and exercise.  I know the show highlights Dr Oz success stories and so they should but what about the millions of others??

No supplement is a solution….not now not ever!

You did this…so be responsible and take the steps to fix it. Don’t look to Dr Oz and some magic teas, pills or potions.  Lazy has to stop and common sense has to come back.

“I like to move it, move it”

Here  is what is amazing and awful at the same time.  The weight loss industry is a multi billion dollar a year industry that sells every kind of product or service but it is the only industry that people don’t revolt about not having success with.

Think about it….most people buy a weight loss product/service with such low expectations because they know it won’t work BUT THEY STILL DO IT.

People are conditioned to spend hard-earned money on something they know going in won’t likely work but they try it any way.  Some will even risk their health to try crazy products.

You would never buy a broken appliance right?

Our hope is high but our expectation is low.  The marketers of these companies have done this and we have all bought in.   Wake up call and reality check.  If a company came up with the magic touch, do you think they would let you have it?  It would end future sales of everything!  They are in the business of making money, not ending their ability to sell to you.

So when I rant and rave and SHOW YOU PROOFof what works you bet I get frustrated when you push it aside because it wasn’t on Dr Oz and or some infomercial with fabulous fit and toned people SELLING A PRODUCT, not a lifestyle……sad that common sense is gone.

Which pound would you rather have?

We teach or kids right from wrong but disregard the rules when it comes to our health??? EPIC FAIL!

Sorry…no crazy infomercial or shiny box coming from me…..just solid advice that works.
And if you read this Dr Oz, please go back to really trying to help change the mindset of America with sound advice, great facts and the harsh reality of what the North American diet and lifestyle is doing to us.

Diet fads are pure fantasy

World Cup soccer has fans going crazy cheering for their favourite teams and their home countries.  Look at the four remaining and what they bring “to the table”.

  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Germany
  • Italy
They all have great food!! Food that is rich and creamy, full of fat and oils, breaded, fried, breads…OMG.  Why aren’t all those soccer players fat and over-weight? Oh, I know…EXERCISE!!  I was watching the news and saw one of the teams fans celebrating their latest win.  The difference between the fans and the players…EXERCISE.

Now, it’s only Tuesday but I have heard of 2 new diets already this week.  Yes two!

One was the Nordic diet and the other was the Swedish diet.  Both have some valid points, but don’t they all?  I think its funny how self-proclaimed experts are creating these international diets.

First, everyone was crazy for the French diet and how French woman don’t get fat…..ummm, yes they do–obesity crosses all international borders.

Then the Mediterranean diet came into popularity….Japanese diet, everyone started guzzling green tea.  I actually laugh out loud when I see these books come out and the author totes it as “secrets”.

There is no mystery as to why populations are overweight just as it is no mystery on how to fix it.  Following a diet that is specific to geographic lines on a map is just silly.

Now…I might actually follow the Swedish diet if it would make me taller and blonder.

It is the foods we eat, how much we eat and how much we move that makes the difference in our waist line…not our proximity to the international date line!  Tadaaaaa!

Maybe I should be starting something here.  I’ve got it, I am starting the Canadian Diet or the Can-eh-dian diet (oohh that was clever) …
- you must eat pea meal bacon once a day and all of the foods you eat need to be red or white to make it authentically Canadian and have maple syrup poured over it.

The Can-eh-dian Diet

Then I will pay some Canadian celebrity an obscene amount of money to say that they tried it and it works.  I will put a little tiny disclaimer at the bottom of all the advertising that says, “Results may vary”.  Sounds kind of familiar, like every other fad diet out there.  You see how these crap diets work?  There’s a formula to them making money, not success for you.

Now I have been called a few things over the years, but I’m adding “fitness magician” to my bio.  There is some special magic in eating real food, in the right portions and exercising.  Or maybe I should be the “fitness detective“.  I’ve solved the mystery of being overweight….shazam!

“Let’s find out if that’s a jelly filled shall we?”

Let’s keep it real people.   If you are struggling with your weight, you know why.
If you would like to add some international cuisine to your diet, then have at it!
But I beg of you to stop falling prey to these marketing scams otherwise known as diet books.

Any “new” diet fad is nothing more than a fantasy.  It is all the same old stuff that doesn’t work, with new packaging, a new celebrity endorsement and a new marketing angle to make you think this is the next greatest thing.

Here is the next greatest thing.  Eat for proper nutrition and get moving.

Laugh…it can help you lose weight

Losing weight and getting fit is a commitment but today we just need to laugh out loud at some Friday funnies, fitness style.

I know that if you haven’t said some of these things, you’ve probably thought them!!

I have heard this one too many times….

Excuses – Just like belly buttons…everybody has one

Now let’s work on fitting into an entire outfit!

…and they look smaller in those gigantic lobes too. Who knew ears get fat too?

I have nothin…

It can also lead to the most popular yoga position…”The flat on your face pose”

Speaking of yoga; see…yoga doesnt cut it…

The classic, “I can’t see my toes pose”

Silly skinny people..

Skinny people stop at a bite or two…the other people don’t stop at all. “Nomnomnomnom”

Have yourself a fantastic FIT FRIDAY!

Laughter burns calories, so laugh…it’s a cheap way to exercise.

Be Nice Mission

Today’s post is not about physical fitness…it’s about mental fitness.  It’s about being a decent person. This last week I have had a number of instances where I had to shake my head.

I am shocked how people have changed, it’s actually sad.

Why is it so hard for people to be nice?

What has happened to us? Is it that technology has advanced that we have lost all of our social graces? Is it that families are so busy that they have forgotten to teach their kids about being a good human being? Is it TV?

What has happened???  What caused this societal change???

We now see bullying of kids and adults more and not only in the workplace and playgrounds and in the prison yards on wheels (aka school bus), but also online.  I am floored with people in business who are rude to customers or potential customers.  It seems that in so many cases people have just stopped caring.

Have we moved so far along that no one remembers if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say it at all?  When did it become ok to trash talk, belittle, insult and just out-and-out be rude??

When you experience random acts of kindness or someone being nice, it is almost a shock–and that’s just sad.

Everyone has their own story, their own experiences that shape them into who they are.  It is your frame of mind who really says who you are as a human being. We have all met people who have had a hard go and they make the absolute best of what they have while there are those who dwell in the pity party that life has dealt them a bad hand.  Then there are those people who are sad/miserable and want others to be just as sad and miserable as they are.

We all love to hear those stories of people who were down and out and pulled themselves out of it. Movies are made and books are written to inspire us to go beyond our circumstances….but it seems that with all of the motivation, inspiration out there that there will always be those people who don’t want to try.

Being nice is a state of mind. You choose how you are going to behave, react, interact.

We all have bad days but I think it speaks to your character on how you react to those bad days and if those bad days lead into bad weeks, bad months, bad years.

I think being nice and being happy go hand in hand.  So many people turn a blind eye on why they should be happy but instead they are upset with what they don’t have.

I wrote a blog post about this a while back, the Have’s and the Have Nots.

I learned a great trick from our pal Amy…aka Declan’s mom (boot campers, you know who she is) this is something that is so easy, requires no effort and not only will change your day it very well could change the day of someone around you….ready for it…….just smile. Your entire body changes and so does your mind when you smile, and sometimes being nice is as easy as giving someone a smile.

I am starting a “BE NICE MISSION”

Be THAT person….be the one that everyone says is SO NICE
Share a smile – do it randomly.

Hold a door open for someone. Let someone pass you while driving (and don’t flip them the bird.)

Tell someone something nice…give a compliment or acknowledgement.

Be THAT person that people look to for inspiration when their day isn’t going the way they had planned. Be THAT person that will get others to smile.

BE NICE and let’s get the BE NICE MOVEMENT moving.

I want the Be Nice Mission to be contagious and it starts with you!
(even using the word contagious gives me the willies as a germaphobe)
Your mission, should you accept it, is to go out and:

  1. Be NICE
  2. Smile
  3. Share

BE THAT PERSON!

Do you look older than you actually are?

I know that 99.9% of us want to look younger than our age.

Just like dieting people will try anything for the “fountain of youth”….creams, lotions, lasers, etc.

But, just like dieting, looking young and feeling young is a matter of lifestyle and choice.

Here are three quick fixes for fighting the aging process:

1. See ‘ya later sugar

  • -Sugar creates a toxic state for your body and increases the chances of certain diseases like cancer.
  • -When you are overweight, it tends to make you look older.
  • -Sugar is so addictive that you keep craving it and the weight piles on

2. Take out the toxins

  • -Alcohol, smoking, processed foods(meaning dead foods, loaded with artificial colours/flavours)

I know you know what I am talking about…we all know people who drink too much and look rough. Same thing with the processed foods, people who live on processed foods look grey almost.

  • -Your internal organs have to work so hard processing this junk that it ages you on the inside and out. You are eroding your inside which is reflective on the outside!!

3. Get your fat fix

Fat free can mean a chemical  s %$# storm! We all need healthy fats in our diet. Essential fatty acids cannot be produced by the body so we need to get them through our nutrition.

If you are lacking in Omega 3′s your skin is probably dry, cracked and wrinkled or deep lines.

  • Great sources are fresh salmon, 1/4 cup nuts like walnuts, almonds, pistachios + flax seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Eat real food, eat real food, eat real food….I will keep saying it and preaching it until you get it…..because it works!!

Make yourself healthy – look and feel years younger!!

I promise that if you ate real food and exercised that you would feel so much younger!

If you are tired and achy it’s because your body is tired of working so dang hard.Reverse the clock…stop aging in dog years!!

Maybe governments do need to dictate

I usually like to do Friday Fitness Funnies but I saw a tweet yesterday that got me fired up, so you’ll have to wait for the funny, while I bring you the serious

The gist of the tweet was that government should have no business in having any say in what people eat.   It was actually 5 tweets in total because the tweeter could not summarize their thoughts, kind of lame in and of itself.  Perhaps, the person should have posted their little rant on Facebook.

A week ago Mayor Bloomberg of NYC laid out his plan to ban sugary sodas…( pop for us Canadians. )

Holy outrage…this created a media firestorm.

The outrage was stupid for lack of a better word.  If people actually read or listened to his position, it is not to ban soda/pop, it is to reduce the serving size….so buh-bye big gulps.  If you want a 32oz sugary soda at a restaurant, it will have to be served in 2 glasses.

Here is an interview he did:

People are DYING from obesity related diseases….you know heart disease, diabetes.
The government has to step in because obesity is costing US billions…billions with a B.
These are preventable diseases and the public is getting mad because they want to limit how much sugar you suck back.  Nanny state? Maybe, but when the people can’t, won’t don’t make decisions in their best interest that effect all of us, maybe the government does need to step in.
I don’t want to be taxed any more and I don’t want to pay for you and all of your tests because you are too lazy to get up and exercise everyday and I don’t want to pay for your laziness because you are too lazy to cook a meal.
People have the right to choose…..
McDonalds is not forcing people to eat at their restaurants….they are servicing the demand.  If people weren’t buying they would not be selling.

Rounder McDonald

Many people in society choose lazy.  Health and being healthy is not a concern to them.

Go out and lap them!

The stats should scare you straight but so many people are ignoring them.
The government has to step in because what is going on now is not working.
I know a few of you are saying “you can’t tell me what to eat.”
Well, someone has to because you are not making the right choices that are in your best interest, so I’m making a stand for what is in my best interest.  I would prefer my tax dollars to help the needy, not the lazy.  I want the money that goes to treating health care issues that are truly preventable to research the things that are not preventable.
IT IS JUST FLIPPIN’ FOOD….. that seems to have become a drug for many.
You have to exercise – end of discussion.  You have to eat right, healthy and for nutrition, not for your ‘fix’.
People have turned food which is fuel, into a drug as addicting as meth.
Food is the most widely ABUSED anti anxiety drug and exercise is the most  potent and under utilized anti-depressant.
Remember the quote from Austin Powers character, “I eat because I’m fat and I’m fat because I eat, it’s a vicious cycle.” Break the cycle, eat great food, nutritious food, healthy food.
STOP IT….food will not fix your emotional problems and any satisfaction you get from eating high fat food is temporary while the effects can be long term.

OK, Friday Fitness Funny…but so true!

Don’t quit on your kids health!

Does it start in childhood…giving up, not trying, quitting? and does this lead to our adult behaviors??

When did we become so wishy-washy?  When did we let the children rule the roost….the tail wagging the dog?

Childhood obesity is a topic near and dear to my heart because I lived it. When I see overweight kids and hear their parents blame outside factors, it gets me seeing red.

A book came out in the spring called Bringing Up Bebe. A story of an American family who moved to France and the essence of the book is that there are less overweight kids in France because they eat better.

The book touches on parenting. The writer says that French parents don’t give in to buying chicken nuggets or fishy crackers because that is all the child will eat. Families eat real food that is prepared not handed out of a window to you in your car via a paper bag.

Children are given the same meal as the parents and that is that. There’s no ‘restaurant approach’.  1 meal, 1 choice.   The author also highlights that vegetables are served as the first part of the meal to ensure that everyone eats their vegetables. This is not a new trend in France. This is the way it has been happening for years. This is how these French parents were raised and are raising their kids the same way.

Now, I know a lot of you are saying, oh but they eat all of that butter, cream and other decadent foods….perhaps.  These kids have clean palates, they experience and know what real food tastes like. Whereas, over here these kids are raised on rainbow fishy crackers, processed mystery meat, and sugar.  Their palates are coated in chemicals, they have no idea what real food tastes like.  The kids in France don’t tote around bags of over processed crackers or bags of gummy snacks or endless amounts of juice out of a box that really isn’t juice.

*Spoiler Alert.  Real food, unprocessed food is filling and satisfying.  TAAA-DAAA!!! Shocker, I know, actually, you know it too! When you eat a real meal that isn’t full of chemicals or additives you rave about what a great meal it was.

Here’s my question after looking into this book…are kids of today and kids of tomorrow being raised to be quitters?

Here is a very typical dialogue that goes on each and everyday:
Mom: Eat your broccoli
Kid: No, I don’t like it, I only like chicken nuggets.
Mom: OK, I will make you some chicken nuggets.

Both are quitters.  The major difference is the child doesn’t know any better and the Mom doesn’t want her poor little manipulative angel to starve.

We-parents/caregivers are teaching our kids to give up and to not try.  You can’t blame it on society.  These life lessons are learned at home.

When did we give up the ability to TRY?

I have blogged about this before and I will ask again, do you think your kids will magically start eating broccoli when they are 25?  Heck no! Why would they?

Well, they might when they wake up with diabetes or are 100lbs overweight and SURPRISE you as their parent had a role to play in that. So you think you have ‘Mom guilt’ now for taking an hour to exercise, think how you will feel when your child is overweight as a youngster and is STILL overweight and sickly as an adult and you know that you played a role in that!

I think we have become a society of quitters – ouch, that was a strong one!

I see it each and everyday.  People come to me for personal training or come to boot camp and THEY QUIT because it is tough.  Getting fat and out of shape is super easy.

Eat crap + sit on the couch + watch mind numbing shows = fat!

Squats, lunges, push ups require effort and it takes more effort if you are carrying extra weight and so many people quit.  Everyone wants easy but easy is lazy. I can say all of this because I have lived it and I know.

It’s time to toughen up.

Toughen up as a parent – toughen up as a person and be healthy already.

Death, disease, disability, what are you waiting for?

Watch this

If you don’t think that carrying around extra weight is no big deal….well here’s your reality check, it is.
If you needed a wake up call, consider THIS IS IT!
Think that you can wait until your schedule changes or when the kids don’t have sports or on and on…..
You can’t.
The longer you wait to get your health in order the longer and harder it will be.  That’s a fact.  Aside from tighter clothes and feeling uncomfortable, are you really ok with having the associated diseases that come along with being overweight?
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • High Cholesterol
  • Heart Disease & High Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Fatty Liver
  • Depression
  • Should I go on??

You don’t think that 25lbs of extra fat on your body is no big deal.  That is until the day you wake up and have a to start your daily routine of poking yourself with insulin needles to stay alive or you  have stroke or heart attack and can’t speak to tell your family you need help.

If nothing else, be a role model for your kids.
Growing up as an overweight child I can tell you how painful it is.  I BEG OF YOU to not let your kids suffer.  They will.  They might not say it.  They might not show it, but they will feel it.
You being overweight is on you.  You did it.  It’s time to fix it.  I’m here to help.

Is there a better reason?
