Fries & Gravy or Abercrombie

*Controversy alert*

A lot of upset people where blasting the social media airwaves this last week because of an old interview from the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch.abercrombie
In the interview (from 7yrs ago) the CEO said:
In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he said in an interview. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.
North America bought into their marketing. Spending over $40 for a t-shirt
(insert Macklemore’s Thrift Shop Song here)
Is it wrong that they targeted a certain demographic-NO. That is there business model.
Lane Bryant or Addition Elle target is exclusive to plus size women.
You don’t go into a Lambrogini dealership hoping to get a $40,000 sedan lambrogini
Choices and options.
You don’t have to shop there and you dont have to like it.
That is the great thing about free enterprise. It would be great if everyone was inclusive of everything but that’s not the way the world works.
We all at some point want the latest and greatest.
For teens it might be an Abercrombie shirt and for adults it might be a Coach purse.
Which brings you back to your choices and options. If you don’t have the body that fits into A&F clothes then you can fix that. You have choices and options.
You can choose to eat healthy and exercise to be in a fit body or you can choose to eat junk and watch tv. Choices x Actions = Results….what results are you getting?bad choices v good choices
I have been on both sides of this. My youth was spent not being able to shop at regular (popular) retailers. I was wearing a lot of elastic waist band pants and plus size sweat shirts. Did I want to wear cute clothes like my friends-heck yeah! Did I stop shovelling fries and gravy into my mouth -nope.
Choices x Actions= Results. fries and gravy
Stop blaming or looking to find fault in others for the way things are in your life. Stop playing the victim card. Don’t put effort into hating a clothing brand because they don’t fit in with your views. Put effort into your own life and making it amazing.

Mother’s Day and why I rant at you!

Giving everyone an early reminder that this weekend is Mother’s Day!!!

It is a bitter sweet time for me.

I LOVE that I am truly blessed to have 3 incredible children. My life became better the day I became a mom.

I lost my mom on my 20th birthday. I never thought that I would be an orphan-not to sound dramatic but losing your mom you lose a piece of your heart.(I lost my dad when I was 6)
I had to grow up fast and thankfully my momma raised me right that I turned out alright!!

I wish I had my mom to share in my life moments. We take so much for granted but when you lose a parent it really tests you as a person.

I’m always nagging you guys to take care of your health because I would never ever want your kids to be without you. That kind of pain is awful.

I keep writing about making your health a priority, scheduling time to make fitness a part of your day, make healthy meals for you and your family, and on and on because YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR FUTURE. It can be long and full of happiness or it can be cut short because you didnt want to take care of yourself.

Today, I beg you…please make your health a priority. Make the time. Being a great mom is more that driving to hockey practice. Being a great mom is having the foresight to know that life can be short and you have the power to extend your days and live a long, and lively life. Please don’t let your kids have life moments without you. Harsh statement? perhaps…but that is reality and that is the truth.

Celebrate this Mother’s Day with the intention that you will be the healthiest mom you can be.

Love and celebrate being a mom.
Love your mom for being your mom.
If you have lost your mom and have someone that is like a mom–celebrate and appreciate them.

Be the healthiest and fittest mom on the block!!!

Sending all of my fellow moms – Lots of love!

Here are 2 healthy new recipes to try this Mother’s Day…enjoy!!

Chocolate/pb protein muffin in a mug!!

Ingredients:
1 Scoop boot camp chocolate protein powder
1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp sugar substitute (stevia,truvia)
1/4 tsp baking soda
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 Tbsp almond milk
1 Tbsp peanut butter

Mix all the dry ingredients in a mug (protein powder, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt) with a fork until well blended and there are no clumps. Add in the egg and almond milk and mix until smooth. Drop the peanut butter into the center of the chocolate mixture and press down to submerge. Microwave for around 1 minute on high (give or take some time depending on your microwave), but watch it! It will start to bubble over the top. If this happens, stop microwaving, press batter back into mug with fork, and continue microwaving. When finished, cake should be cooked but still very moist.

Carrot Cake Cookies

{gluten-free, raw, vegan}

Makes about 2 dozen

1 cup dates
1 large carrot
2 cups walnuts
1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon – or pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon salt

Puree dates in a food processor, then remove and place in a large bowl. Cut the carrot into one-inch pieces and add to the food processor. Pulse until they are finely chopped, then remove and place in the bowl with the dates. Pulse the walnuts in the food processor until they are broken up into very small pieces, about the size of tiny pebbles. Remove and add to the bowl.

Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and use your hands to combine the ingredients or dump it all back into the food processor to blend it a little more quickly. Taste, adjust seasonings if you like, and dump it back into the bowl.

Form small balls with the dough in your hands (about the size of a ping-pong ball) and flatten gently between your palms. Top with a bit of shredded coconut and grated carrot. Store covered in the refrigerator and serve chilled.

Who are you???

The message that needs to keep being sent is:

You need to take care of your health. End of discussion.

You can excuse your way to the moon and back on why you can’t find time to exercise until you have a major health crisis come up and then you will want to turn back the hands of time.

The time is now my friends. You make the time for exercise-like it or not. Obviously, I am biased about living a healthy lifestyle, BUT, I am proof that exercise and eating real food can change your life. I was MISERABLE (angry, sad, lonely-did I mention angry & sad) when I was overweight. I can tell you that my world is amazing now and that is why I nag you guys. I know both sides…the dark side is dark and if I can get you to the bright side, you will never go back!!

What boggles my mind is that smart people are so dumb (sorry). I know that you want to be at every soccer game and hockey practice. I know that you work a lot and get home late and/or start work early. I know you are tired. I also know that if you dont take care of your body that it will not take care of you. You think that 10-15lbs is no big deal, well, it is. For you boot campers, you know how hard it is to run with the weighted vest on, imagine that all day everyday. You know how good it feels to take that vest off, that’s what losing weight does to your entire body…total relief!

I will keep saying it, make the time for your health. I promise that you will be happier, have more energy and look better, who doesnt want that??

My message has always been the same–be a good role model for your family. Be healthy, show them fitness/health is important. Don’t let them suffer what you are suffering right now!

Ask yourself this…who are you?

I know a lot of you will reply,

“I am a mom, wife, job title, volunteer, kid taxi…and on and on”

Wouldn’t it be great to add in there, I am the one who has run those hills all week(even though I am sore, and exasuted). I am the one that is now wearing a size 6 skirt, I am the one that is no longer taking insulin, I am the one that has made my health and my life a priority so I can be a better wife, parent, sister, employee.

There is an easy fix to your weight loss struggles…..ready for it??!!

Show your a&% up.

You make the time and yes you might miss a practice or you might have to get someone to pick up Jr from gymnastics but in the grand scheme of things is it not better that you are working on your health so that you can make it to your grandkids practice and recital??

You make the time and stop quitting when things get tough.

Losing weight and being healthy is as easy or as hard as you would like to make it.

Happy Friday, or FriYAY!!

Is cheating ok?

Could you imagine the horror that you would experience if your son or daughter came home from school and announced, “Hey Mom, I got a really good mark on my test at school today! I cheated on a couple of the questions to help me out.”

Or how about the feeling you’d have if your spouse said, “Honey, I met this fantastic lady today and we shared a kiss. Just a little one. Only for a few minutes.”

I’m pretty sure that none of you would like to hear those kinds of statements anytime.  Cheating is cheating.  Even if it a little bit of a cheat.  The bottom line is that cheating is wrong.

We all can agree on that.

But why are so many people fine with cheating on themselves?

Why do we justify that little piece of cake or the half a bag of chips when we have made a commitment to ourselves to lose weight?

Why is it ok when we go out to dinner and order the drenched in butter or creamy sauce entrée do we tell ourselves, “Its no big deal.  This little cheat won’t hurt me.”

The problem isn’t that little cheat.  It’s the justifications (excuses) that we make to ourselves that it’s just this one time.  It won’t ever happen again.  We can have this little something tonight, but tomorrow, we’ll get right back on the straight and narrow.

The reality is that you are cheating on yourself and one little treat leads to a bigger cheat, which leads to a cheat day, which turns into a cheat week and pretty soon, you’ve forgotten all about your original goals.

The same is true when you ditch a workout for your favourite TV show or even when you do commit to showing up but you only give 50%.  You’re cheating on yourself.

Remember what our parents used to tell us? “Cheaters never prosper.”  Well, your parents were right.  Sure the first few cheats may not hurt you, but I can guarantee that they won’t help you either.

Do yourself a favour; don’t cheat on yourself.  You wouldn’t accept it from the people around you, so why accept it from yourself?

Don’t be a cheater

Thinking Thursday

A little fun fact sharing Thursday to bring you just a few reminders to think about while you are shopping.  Some things to you might will want to open your eyes to.

Did you know:
  • Kraft Macaroni & Cheesedoubles your daily limit of deadly trans fats. (Which should be zero). It also contains yellow food colourings # 5 & #6 that have been linked to behavioral problems in children.

Sure you want to tell them?

Did you know:
  • Lunchables the nachos/cheese dip and juice version hits your little one with 890mg of sodium, 21 grams of fat AND 25 grams of sugar. I know you want your little one to excel in science but not this kind of franken-food. Preservatives, fillers, sugar, bad oils…should I go on?
Did you know:
  • Appleshave quercetin, which is an antioxidant that regulates blood sugar. They also average about 5 grams of fiber AND they are portable! (had to throw a healthy one in just to make sure you’re paying attention!)

    An apple a day…

Did you know:
  • Nutella…oh beloved Nutella, why must you be so evil?? For 2tbsp you get 20 grams of sugar (OMG) and 11 grams of fat. The first couple of ingredients are sugar and palm oil. We all knew this one was bad…hello, it’s chocolate spread!! The deceptive marketing about the health benefits is just that….deceptive.

    Just say no to Nutella

Did you know:
  • Smartfood, well the name implies that you are making a good food choice…nope, trash this. 11 grams of fat, 330mg of sodium and almost 200 calories is not smartfood…it’s fat-food.

    Not so smart

Did you know:

  • Red bell peppers(had to add another healthy in) have 2x the vitamin C and 10x the vitamin A compared to the green pepper, which by the way is also incredibly healthy and beneficial.  Versatile, sweet, crunchy and not processed.

This should ring a healthy bell

Did you know:
  • Overweight people are 50% more likely to develop heart disease?
Take away messages…
  1. Eat real food.
  2. If you are eating packaged/processed food, for the love of… please read the frickin’ label.
  3. Stop poisoning your kids…quick & easy usually means garbage in a package.

8 Energy Essentials

Everyone wants more energy, right?  I’ll let you in on a little secret here…Your supply of energy is endless!  That’s right it is!  And I DON’T mean your energy is  fueled by some over caffeinated and sugared drink that tastes like cough syrup.  Yeah, I’m looking right at you Red Bull.  I’m talking about a way to ensure that you have endless energy in a healthy and responsible way.

There are some rules that I follow which are essential to having and keeping my energy high.

Before I go over my high energy life rules, you ALWAYS have to keep in mind that the amount of energy is totally up to you!

1- First and foremost, your level of energy is a decision. You decide each and every day how you are going to feel. If you let people dictate your energy you will always be looking for “that extra energy”.

The mind and body are connected and if you repeatedly say “I’m tired”, guess what, you will have convinced yourself you are tired.

Decide the moment you open your eyes in the morning that you are going to have a ton of energy.  I guarantee if you program your mind to start your day saying that you are going to have energy to burn, you will!!

2-Real energy requires real food.  If you eat junk you will feel like junk. Choose power foods.  Food is fuel.  Fuel your day with premium foods.

High energy people respect their bodies and love having energy and would not trade that for chips or cookies or any other crap.

3-Energy creates energy.  If you want to have more energy then you need to kick your pal Debbie Downer to the curb.  If you hang around high energy, positive people, you’ll start to feel the same.  If you are around people who are lazy and negative it rubs off.  Choose your peeps wisely! (This ties into point one as well.)

4-Protect your energy.  Stay away from the energy suckers.  You know the ones, their cup is half empty and the sky is falling.  Those people can drain you and suck every bit of energy from you.  I am all about inspiring and motivating others but there are some that can’t be saved….so move along and don’t try!

5-Sleep is essential for energy.  Your body needs to heal, recover and recuperate. By running on 4-5 hrs of sleep a night does not make you a rock star (unless you actually are a rock star)

Sleep helps your body stay strong.  Turn in earlier and aim to get your 7-8hrs a night.  Oh and for those of you who are about to say, “Well I’m used to getting four hours of sleep.  It’s how I’m programmed.”  You are kidding yourself.  Sooner or later it will catch up with you in a big, bad way.  Stop it and get more sleep.

6-Words have power.  Speak with enthusiasm.  Speak with a smile on your face. If you are monotone or speak with a ho-hum attitude your body will respond the same way.  Your body and your body language affect your energy.  So pep up your tone and inflection and stand up straight and stop slouching! Oh yeah, SMILE! It’s infectious to you and everyone around you!

7-Energy requires expending energy…physically. Getting your blood flowing, heart pumping, muscles firing creates energy.  If you sit all day and don’t exercise you get tired and lethargic and claim to have “no energy to workout”  Fit people thrive on expending energy and get fired up after each and every workout.  Exercise is essential for keeping your energy up!!

8-Best energy drink on the planet……water. Don’t believe me, try it! Feeling tired, low energy-drink water–trust me!
Not only will water keep your energy up but it will also do this. <-(Click the word this).

Christmas: Eat, drink and be merry! (for 1 minute)

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS by Lauren NOT CARRIE.

1.  Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately.. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat.. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day ?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I really do love a good laugh! No, I don’t support any of these, but it’s Christmas, so enjoy.

Special thanks to Julie for sending this to me.  You know, I sometimes think you are on a personal mission to cause me to have a stroke!
