Cravings…arrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!

Cravings.

It’s almost a dirty word.  It sets off such emotion. We all have them and we all deal with them differently.

The triggers to these cravings are endless.  Hormones, TV,  commercials, watching other people eating something, listening to other people talking about food, emotions….and on and on.

I have a few tactics that I use to help me stay on track to battle cravings.   Tactics?  Oh yes tactics.  This is warfare my friends.  Get your armour on.  It’s go time!

Tactic #1 Brush your teeth
This will kill a craving in its tracks.  Food tastes weird right after you brush your teeth. The benefit of doing this is twofold.  You clean teeth and kill the craving. Make sure you brush your tongue and inside your cheeks as well for an even stronger effect–weird I know, but try it!

Tactic #2 Chew some sugar-free gum
This is simple and it works. The chewing takes your mind off of the craving. There are now dessert gums. Sugar free and that will help with any post meal cravings for sweets.  Try it!

Tactic #3 Drink like you live in the desert
Most people are dehydrated and end up mistaking hunger or cravings for actually being thirsty. Water is magic…seriously!  Not only does it quash your cravings but it helps your metabolism.  Double whammy.  Boo-yah!!!
Now, I know many of you are rolling your eyes about me mentioning water, AGAIN–but if you read my blog post about sweeteners, I use Crystal Light to help get in my allotted water and have lots of options for flavours.

Tactic #4 – Chew on this….
Fibre…this will help battle those cravings by slowing down the absorption of sugar.  Aim to get 30 grams of fibre each and every day.
Here are some great high fibre foods that you can easily incorporate into each meal:
-apples 4 gm of fibre
-broccoli  7gm in 3/4 cup
-blackberries 7gms per cup
-beans   6gm in 1/2 cup
-oatmeal  7 gms 3/4 cup
-peas 9 gms in 1/2 cup
-strawberries 4gms per cup
-raspberries 5 gms per cup

Tactic #5 Zzzzzzzzzzz
At night cravings go sky high….that is when you need to shut ‘er down.
When you are tired you make bad choices.  If you see that you get into the habit of snacking at night.  STOP IT!!
Go to bed early and you will feel so much better!!!

Use these 5 tactics and crush those cravings!

If nothing changes……nothing changes.

Everyone knows what they “should” be doing but only very few actually do it, and by “it” I mean exercise and eat properly.

It’s time to make changes.

  • Time to plan your meals and COOK THEM
  • Time to schedule in your workouts

Things will come up that will derail your from your plan, but you need to dial into your ninja stealth moves and be able to recover and stay on track.
(Oh yes, I just said ninja stealth moves! LOL)

Meetings come up, kids get sick, traffic happens, you forgot your lunch.  The list of “didn’t plan on this happening goes and on and on…

Bumps in the road are bumps in the road.  They do not give you a  licence to eat whatever is quick or easy.  It’s not permission for you to skip exercise.  You really need to be stronger than your excuses.

Being healthy is not a punishment…it is a reward!

Exercise and eat smart.  That’s all I’m asking for.  It’s prevention.  It is going to help you live a longer, happier and healthier life.

Think about this for a sec.  How many people do you know that have health issues and for them, it’s now too late.  TOO LATE.  Don’t become that person or statistic.  Not when you have the ability and wherewithal to take control.

You get through one day at a time. You set goals, real goals (specifics please!), not fluffy, obscure goals (i.e. I will lose weight).  You say, “I will lose 10 pounds by April 1st, be able to do 10 more pushups”…etc.

Those days you just aren’t feeling up for a workout.  Show up to boot camp.  I guarantee that you will leave feeling happy and proud of yourself that you did it!

Even Disney suffers the effects of bullying

Imagine if you will, a child is on the street running back and forth between moving cars.  He is jumping in front of cyclists, buses, cars and people just walking.  There, on the sidewalk is his mother; ignoring the obvious danger her son is putting himself in.  In fact, a driver stopped his car and told the mother that if she didn’t stop the boy, he was going to die.  The mother was incensed!  How dare this man tell her how to raise her child?  How dare this obvious “do-gooder” point out the shortcomings of her parenting abilities?

It went so far that the mother sued the man claiming that she embarrassed her and caused her to suffer depression.  There were other mothers that joined the lawsuit creating a class-action lawsuit against the man, claiming that no one has any right to try to protect any child from their parents.  A parent has a right to allow their own child to kill itself and no one can stop their bad parenting.

Seems completely impossible for this to happen doesn’t it.  This is political correctness run a muck.  This is ultimate in stupidity.  This is what is happening all around us.  No, not this exact situation, but this premise that we can’t tell the truth because we are so afraid of offending someone.  We can’t tell it like it is because some ‘expert’ has said little Johnny will suffer low self-esteem for the rest of his life.

Well, this week, I was floored when I read that my favourite place on earth had also fallen victim to political correctness.  The greatest company on earth gave into the outcry of a few at the cost of many.

Disney threw in the towel on a great program, “Habit Heroes”.  The attraction hadn’t even received full-blown release yet, and it has been closed. The program was a direct hit at child obesity using exercise, healthy choices and the always popular good versus bad as Will Power and Callie Stenics would have battled such evil beings as “The Snacker”, “The Glutton” and “Lead Bottom”.

"If you're smart, I'm broke. Don't educate yourself about fat loss."

So who complained? Weight loss surgeons and fat-acceptance groups! So, who has the most to lose by children learning proper nutrition, exercise and healthy choices…that’s right weight loss surgeons.   And if everyone learns how to be healthy and control their weight through exercise and nutrition, who will be left on the outside looking in? Fat-acceptance groups…what the hell are “fat-acceptance groups”?

Fat-acceptance?  I accepted that I was fat when I was a teenager.  I would look at myself in the mirror and make excuses about why I was the way I was.  I would lie to myself.  I would tell people around me I was happy and ok with myself.  The reason I did that was because who in the world wants to admit, they are happy being fat!!??  Hold on, I know…people who are too friggin’ lazy to do what it takes to lose weight.  People who are too lazy to make a real meal because its easier to go buy fast food and chips than it is to cook a meal and cut up veggies.

“The attraction is currently closed as we work to further refine the experience,” Kathleen Prihoda, Disney’s media relations manager, told Yahoo on Wednesday. “Our goal with Habit Heroes is to make sure it conveys a positive message about healthy lifestyles in a fun way.”

Well, in my humble opinion Kathleen, that is exactly what Disney had in it’s new Epcot exhibit.  So bring it back, unchanged and ready to teach with the truth.

Fat is expensive to all of us.  Fat is not healthy.  Fat impacts quality of life.  Offended by fat education?  Then move right past the exhibit, keep waddling right on over to find a funnel cake with ice-cream, syrup and sugar and all the finest fixins’.…they are incredible and will satisfy any binge needed.  No need to stop at any of those silly healthy restaurants that serve salads and vegetables.  Fresh produce…oh the horror if your children saw you doing something that was good for them.  In fact…why don’t you threaten to sue restaurants that have healthy choices because a skinny smiling child seated next to you and your “fat-acceptance” family could be disturbing to you and your precious “little” herd.

Was that harsh? You bet it was harsh but this crap has me fired up.  This is political crapness.  Where do I get to complain that my rights and feelings are being hurt?  Oh yeah, and I have the right to voice my opinion on this subject.  I’ve been on the obeses (not fat) OBESE side of the fence and NEVER would I tell skinny, healthy, fit people to conform to accepting fat.  I wanted to be able to conform to the world of healthy!!

Disney did it’s homework.  Disney had a solid partner on the program.  Disney doesn’t go into any thing without doing it’s due diligence, research and testing.  So what happened this time?

I just don’t get it! What’s next…a new Disney Princess to appease the massive?  I can see her now, Princess Porker in the Land of Lard.

On a side note…I’ve read lots articles all with polls on the subject.  I’ve cast my vote on everyone and guess what?  100% of the polls show that Disney has made a mistake and should put the exhibit back AS IS!

Here are lots of articles about the cancellation that was to have opened today!

Are you eating this poison? You might be surprised.

Think there are short cuts to losing weight??  Magazines, tv ads, infomercials, are always telling us that they have a short cut.  Ummmm no…sorry.  There are NO short cuts.

If you are looking for ways to cut corners so you can lose fat fast then you will be very disappointed and bigger, probably with other health risks. You can’t and let’s be honest, you know that.

The real deal is that you HAVE to move and by move that doesn’t mean just stroll on a treadmill or walk the dog. You have to move, and challenge your muscles.
You have to eat REAL food. There are some amazing foods out there that will help you lose weight, and give you energy; drumroll please…

…lean sources of protein, veggies, fruit, ( green face ).

Yes, I know a bunch of you just rolled your eyes.  Exciting!!  Yeah!! Well, it all depends on how you look at it.  I don’t think its exciting carrying extra weight, stressing over the clothes that don’t fit, or being so tired that you can’t do anything.  To me, that’s not exciting, but to many people out there it must be!

I think its pretty exciting that I have energy to burn and that I am not riding a blood sugar roller coaster.  I eat for energy. I think that real, healthy food is cool!

Your food should be what gives you energy.  Your food should be as close to the way nature intended it to be made as possible (although I do love seedless watermelons and I know that isn’t how nature intended it).  You are the result of what you put in your body in many ways.  Put crap in long enough, you look and feel like crap.   On that note, here is something else to think about…

I’ve talked about this before but it’s so worth repeating; be careful of hidden dangers in your “food”.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFS) is basically a sweetener that is produced from uneatable corn.

This ***poison*** is completely horrible for you and the worse part is …

(wait for it)

…high Fructose corn syrup is in almost every processed food you eat and the foods you feed your kids!

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is processed very differently in the body than other sugars and thus has different effects.  Recent research has shown that high fructose corn syrup leads to:

  • Abnormal increases in body fat (especially in the abdomen)
  • Directly linked to increased incidence of diabetes
  • Consumption directly correlated with increased obesity rates
  • And like I said, it is found in almost everything (see the list below).  I avoid this stuff like the plague.

I eat real food (non processed)  that contains ZERO HFCS.
High Fructose Corn Syrup = BELLY FAT
Here is a list of food with high levels of HFCS:

Jelly: Smucker’s, Welch’s, many others
Syrup: Aunt Jemima Original Syrup, other fake syrups
Pop: Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, 7Up, Dr. Pepper
Power Drinks: Gatorade, Powerade
Juice: Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail, Minute Maid Products, Most “fruit drinks”
Barbeque Sauces
Bread (nearly all high-volume brands)
Ketchup
Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup
Salad Dressing
Ice Cream (any cheap store brand)
Frozen and refrigerated products aimed at kids:
Popsicles
ice cream treats
juice boxes
Candy
M&Ms
Caramels
Twizzlers
Lollipops
Hard candies
Gummy Bears
GumBalls
Jelly Beans

Have your resolutions given way to your excuses?

It’s almost March….3 months into a the New Year and where are you?

Did you start the year all gung-ho and saying that this was the year you were going to kick that body fat to the curb??

Where are you now?? Have you given up or are you staying strong??

Have you been using one of these 3 excuses?  The three excuses get me absolutely  fired up.  These are literally about the worst excuses anyone can come up with!

  1. My ____(insert body part) is not good. When it’s better I’ll start
  2. I don’t have the time
  3. I just can’t put the money together

ALL 3 excuses are bull. Here’s how I see it.

*My ___hurts:  everyone has something that hurts.  We can always work with you and your hurt and you’ll still have the benefit of exercising, safely. Your heart will hurt if you keep carrying any extra weight.

Yeah, your excuse is so invalid!

*I don’t have the time:  TOTAL LIE.  There are people who are busier than you that manage to “fit” in fitness. You have enough time to make excuses, so how about you redirect that time and get your butt moving!! I can guarantee that  watching TV is going to do nothing for your health.

*I don’t have the money.  Fair enough, but if you break it down and look at what you spend money on (Starbucks, eating out, movies, entertainment, etc) I think you could probably find a way.  If it’s worth it to you, you’ll find a way, otherwise you will find an excuse.  Is it worth it to you to be healthy?

Trust me, I have heard just about every excuse.

Here is one of my favourite kick your excuses to the curb videos.  If you “think” you can’t …YOU NEED TO WATCH THIS

Do you let yor kids eat this?

For me food is food. Actual, real food.  I admit, I am a supporter of “Green face” eating. Green face means that your food is grown or it has a face.  Don’t get hung up on the face part.

Lean sources of protein and an array of veggies.

That is the opposite of faux food.  That is the “food” that is all manufactured food.  It’s been created food.  It comes in many wonderful colours, has wonderful sounding names and generally has an incredible marketing budget behind it so that you’ll be more likely to buy it based on “pretty”.

One of the faux foods that tops my list is cereal. If there is a cartoon on the box, it is a red alert not to eat it!!

Food manufacturers are trying to lure parents in by saying that these sugary concoctions to start your day are “better” because they are now made with whole grains. Ummm, not really.  The great thing about labeling laws is that  you can say things (over inflate) that only need to be part true.  In that sugary bowl of mess, you might get 1 gram of fiber. Having an apple will get you a minimum of 4 grams of fiber.

Not so lucky are ya

Lucky Charms are on my hit list today. If you are feeding this “cereal” to your kids, you will be “lucky” if they don’t end up with a weight problem.
Let’s keep this real shall we.

It’s a bowl of candy you are serving to your kids. Brightly coloured marshmallows–that’s candy.

You jack your kids blood sugar sky-high first thing in the morning, so they crash at school.  Then they start looking for another hit of sugar to keep the high going #addict.

So, let’s go over what are in these brightly coloured sugar bombs. Yellow dye #5 & 6.  That sounds yummy…yellow dye. Studies have indicated that Yellow 5&6 as potential causes of behavioural problems and hyperactivity. Add that to the spike in blood sugar and it’s no wonder why ADHD is being misdiagnosed.

Here’s another tasty ingredient that is in your not so lucky charms.  Trisodium Phospate. This delish add-in is found in many toilet bowl cleaners….oh yes, toilet cleaner!  Maybe appropriate if your child has a potty mouth, but…

Now I know a lot of people will be calling me a fear monger……the truth hurts. If you want to stay in denial, well, so be it.  But, these manufactured foods are toxic and dangerous and consumption year after year will add up.

If you are investing money into your children’s future with academics, sports, RESP’s, then why, WHY, would you knowingly feed them garbage?

Take the time to make food, good food.  Healthy eating habits will last a life-time…do everything you can to make it a long life.

The cost of eating healthy

Food, it does a body good

I hear all the time that it is expensive to eat healthy–total bull.

I think it is far more expensive to eat out (not knowing who is touching/preparing your food) sorry, personal germ-a-phobe moment

Going out to eat a salad with chicken breast for $13, really? You get about $1.00 worth of salad and the chicken breast is about 3.00.  Total cost $4…a nine dollar margin for the restaurant–gah! And yes, I know, overhead, employees and the cost of doing business stuff.

Not to mention the issue of who is actually preparing and touching your food…ick! Save the money and make the dang salad and bbq up the chicken.

It is expensive to eat pre-packed food not to mention its gross, crappy full of chemicals/preservatives to make it shelf stable for years…whole other blog post on that issue.

You need to reconsider how you look at the cost of food.  Yes, you can eat a big jumbo box of some kind of cereal that will cost you a couple of bucks. But there are other costs with that mentality.  The cost of that is gaining weight, speeding up the aging process, which means it essentially you shorten your life.  What’s the price tag on that I wonder?

Or, you can spend a few more cents and eat some protein power packed eggs for breakfast–that will help you keep your weight in check, turn back the aging clock, power your mind and muscles and extend your life.

Are you really, going to complain over a couple of bucks here and there to live a better life??

Take 10 minutes and plan your week with the meals that you will eat.  You’ll find having a plan will make it much easier. It takes the stress out of eating and you are less tempted when walking the food isles.

I really don’t think it’s that much of a big deal to look at your week ahead and see what you have to do and plan from there.  10 minutes people, 10 freaking minutes.  That’s all it takes!

If you tell me that you just can’t do it, then I will tell you that you will never get to the next stage in your weight loss goals; plain and simple.  Not to mention, you’re telling yourself, “Me and my family just aren’t worth it.”  OUCH!

A few tips to make things easier and more affordable.

  1. Read the weekly sales flyers.  Look for items on sale that are on your healthy food list. Great deals on the crap?  Who cares, it’s crap!
  2. Shop with the seasons—buy produce that is in season.  It’s always a better price and it tastes better.
  3. Frozen is ok—buying frozen produce is ok and it is always cheaper.  Look for flash frozen from a natural state…aka, not pre-cooked, seasoned, chemically altered, etc.
  4. Get creative—-if extra lean ground beef or ground turkey is on sale then buy extra, freeze it and use some to whip up a chili packed with beans and veggies
  5. Grill up meat so you can pack it in your meals.  Even do up extra that you can freeze.
  6. Buy a vacuum sealer.  You can but extra of everything when it’s on sale and freeze it up! We also make up a lot of meals ahead of time, vacuum seal them and warm them up later

Here is a sample of my shopping list.

  • Avocados (2) 3.00
  • Hummus   3.00
  • Red peppers (2) 3.00
  • Apples (5-6) 4.00
  • Eggs – dozen 2.50
  • Spinach 4.00-fresh (frozen is about 2.00)
  • Broccoli (frozen) 3.00
  • Frozen raspberries 4.00
  • Tomatoes (diced/can) 1.00
  • Black Beans (1 can) 1.00
  • Salmon (canned) 2.50
  • Sirloin Steak 5.00
  • Skinless Chicken breasts-fresh (5-6) 20.00
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk 4.00 (2 containers for $4.00)

I put approximate values on the above foods

Grand total for my staples per week is $65–

Yes, I spend more than $65 a week (I am feeding a family of 5) but those are some of my staples.

I buy more veggies, lean meats, brown rice or quinoa, but I always have the above items in my cart weekly.

Start shopping smart for eating smart and watch your grocery bill go down along with the pounds!!!

Protein…it does a body good

For everyone who has participated in one of my weight loss programs or taken on my 7 day slim down, 5 ½ day diet or had me prepare a nutrition plan for you, you know I am big on ensuring you eat healthy, lean protein.

Why do I love protein so much?

This is protein

Well for starters it has an impact on your blood sugar, glucagon, insulin, satiety, blood amino, nitrogen retention, glycemic load, muscle health, energy, negative caloric state and a whole lot of other really fun things.

Let me break it down for you.

  1. Taking in healthy Protein actually makes your body burn more calories just by consuming it because it takes energy to break it down into bite size pieces that your body uses.  Those are amino acids…they are good things
  2. Protein helps protect you from losing muscle.  If you are in an amino acid deficit, your body eats its own muscle.  That means less fat burning ability…that’s not good.
  3. Protein helps control insulin and blood sugar so your body produces the fat burning goodness that you want…that’s a good thing
  4. Protein takes longer to break down and digest than carbohydrates so your hunger is controlled longer…that’s a good thing.

All foods (carbs, protein, fat, micro and macro nutrients) have an effect on insulin and blood sugar. Carbohydrates jack blood glucose levels faster and more that the others.  Then your body makes insulin to suck out the sugar.  Then the sugar gets transported to your muscles and liver so that it can be used later.

That process also makes your body release a bunch of other hormones that help it store all that energy….aka, fat stores. Not really what most people who are looking to lose weight want.

What you want is your body to release fat, not store it.

So here are my recommendations for healthy protein choices. A serving size of meat is about 3-4oz or about the size of a deck of cards for 22-28 grams of protein.

Seafood

This is an excellent source of protein because it is low in fat. Fish such as salmon is a little higher in fat, but it is the heart healthily kind: omega 3 fatty acids.

White Meat Poultry

Stay with the white meat. Dark Meat is a little higher in fat. The skin is loaded with saturated fat.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the least expensive forms of protein. Hard boiled eggs are a great option and portable!

Beans

A 1/2 cup of beans contains almost as much protein as an ounce of broiled steak. Beans are loaded with fiber to keep you feeling full

Pork Tenderloin

The other / other white meat.  It’s 31% leaner than it was 20 years ago.

For my Veggie friends–Soy is another source of protein, which is controversial, but I’ll save that for another post.

Lean Beef

Surprise, lean beef has only one more gram of saturated fat than a skin-less chicken breast. It is also an excellent source of iron, B12 and zinc

Cottage cheese serving size is roughly ½ cup for 15 grams of protein.

Egg whites have 3 grams of protein while the yolk has the same. So eat your eggs. You get a “complete” protein when using yolks and whites, so eat the yolks.

Protein powders are a great supplement / addition.  Most are 20-25 grams per scoop.

My recommendation?  Get a high quality Whey protein (such as our fabulous Boot Camp protein). It has the best amino acid profile and it’s been shown to elevate your body’s own antioxidant levels of glutathione…that’s a good thing.

To summarize…. eat PROTEIN…. with everything. :-)

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

We all know It’s not really a holiday.  Let’s be honest and call it a Hallmark holiday and a celebration for retailers. People spend ridiculous amounts of money because they feel they need to and then get a hate on for Valentine’s Day because of the materialistic nature of the beast.

Obviously, I am not a supporter of all of the cheap chocolate and brightly coloured candy.

Remember, no one is making you eat the candy that you’ll be given or see in the bowls around the office that no one else wants so get a grip on yourself and just say NO!

The truth is, I really like Valentine’s Day.  Why not have a day to celebrate love?! Oh, dial it down you naysayers.  I can hear you, “I don’t need a specific day to show people I love them.” – yada, yada, yada….bah humbug!

It’s a day to celebrate, acknowledge the special people in you lives, be a bit nicer & happier.  Is that so wrong?

Those people who beat down Valentine’s Day and say that it’s useless are negative and if you come across these Valentine haters, give them an extra big smile, hold the door open for them, wish them a very Happy Valentine’s Day. Better yet, give them a hug!  That should make them really uncomfortable.  Maybe uncomfortable enough to realize that it is just a fun day and we all know the world needs more fun days.

Hate the commercialization of love?  There are a lot of things you can do for free that are just a little more thoughtful, a little more giving, a little more special…is that so wrong??

Yes, companies profit off of this day but again, it’s your choice to buy or not. This is a great time to get creative to show your love in a different way.  I obviously show my boot campers I love them through extra push-ups, squats and lunges…all with love!!!

Just like it’s your choice to be happy or your choice to love your loved ones. SO WHAT if it’s a commercial celebration?  Just celebrate those you love a little bit extra.  What’s so wrong with that? Nothing!

Another reason I like Valentine’s Day is that it brings much-needed attention to Heart Health. LOVE YOURSELF enough to take care of your health.

I could give you a list of do’s and don’t but you know what’s right and wrong.

Eat smart (real food), exercise (show up to boot camp), drink water, get enough sleep.  The all = love yourself!

A few more I would like to throw in:

  • Tell the people you love-that you love them each and everyday
  • Be kind…do unto other’s…
  • Be appreciative of your good health
  • Do something you wouldn’t usually do.  Wear your favourite red sweater or try a new red lipstick.

Time to redirect your thinking.

My take away message…Love yourself, be kind to others.

Happy Valentine’s Day and I hope you are all rocking your favourite red sweater!!!

Dance like no one is watching
