*Controversy alert*

The CEO of Coca Cola showed up in my news feed yesterday, in media clip/interview. Coca Cola has started a campaign to help fight the war on obesity and Muhtar Kent was getting grilled. The interviewers asked some great, needed and tough questions.
Here is my thought: This may surprise you a bit.
Well done Coca Cola!
Now I know a ton of you are in shock for me supporting Coca Cola but here is my rationale.
Sugary drinks are not the entire problem. Yes, their mas availability, relatively cheap cost and marketing have made the problem greater, but the real problem is people who have no self-control or couldn’t be bothered to be informed or educated.
Pop for my Canadians friends / Cola or Soda for my Americans … is not making the world fat. Bad judgement and lack of willpower is making the world fat.
By saying Coca Cola or any other brand is making people fat, it is the same as saying forks are making people fat. Forks don’t make people fat. It’s what you put on your fork that makes you fat!
Coca Cola and a lot of other big brands offer nutritional informational on the packaging, they are donating money to active lifestyle programs and are changing their marketing to be more responsible….I say good job!
This is a societal issue not a sugary drink issue. Use some common sense people. Old school…calories in vs calories out. It is a lot easier to suck back a lot of calories than it is to expend those calories BUT THAT IS THE CHOICE YOU MAKE!!! You do the time for the crime. If you drink it you need to start moving.
There is enough information and education out there to make an informed decision. If you are claiming that you had no idea drinking a 2L bottle of Coke would cause you to gain weight, you are lyin! If you start your day with the super size bucket of soda at Burger King to wash down your 2,000 calorie trough slop, then you deserve what you end up like. It’s a choice. They didn’t make you choose them, that’s on and in you.
Coca Cola and so many other brands offer choices and options. They offer low-calorie or no calorie or less sugar and even portion controlled sizes. Again, YOU HAVE OPTIONS. If you have no self-control or bad judgement, that is on you not on Coke (or Pepsi—self admitted fan of Pepsi Max)
I know all of you natural peeps are freaking out right now and ready to start typing me a nasty reply or email. Yes, these drinks are full of chemicals, fillers, additives bah blah blah. YOU HAVE THE CHOICE NOT TO DRINK THEM.
This issue is about the food industry as a whole not just one product or brand. If you are fat and you want to change that then your options are fewer. If you are unhealthy and you want to be healthy, your options are less. If you are in fantastic shape, healthy and fit then you have a lot of options…you just have to exercise self-control (pun intended).
Everyone has to go on their own health journey and yes I actually commend Coca Cola for being proactive, spending the money on wellness programs and trying to connect communities to education & information.
Coca Cola is making the effort…what are you doing to make an effort to better health?

Historically when a doctor begins his or her career they take a solemn oath. Known as the Hippocratic Oath, it originated from the Greeks of legend. No one knows for certain which Greek penned it, Hippocrates, Pythagoras or the students of them, but it isn’t the writer, it’s the words.
Through time, it has been changed, amended, interpreted differently and even replaced with the Declaration of Geneva (which has also seen its fair share of amendments).
This is not a history lesson, you know that’s not my style. This is about what the oath once stood for and why a couple of the things that I’ve encountered over the last couple of days have me all fired up right now.
There is one particular line that existed which means a lot to me. Even though it was made for doctors, I believe in it as a mantra for any fitness professional. FITNESS PROFESSIONAL, not paid number counter.
I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and judgment; I will keep them from harm and injustice.
What does that mean?? In its simplest form, I will make sure that nutrition is the cornerstone of healing and that I will NEVER hurt anyone with what I do. A line later in the oath also says that I will not go beyond my knowledge and refer to someone more qualified if I don’t know (paraphrasing).
Today I talked to a firefighter that has been off work for a while because of a severe shoulder injury that he received while working out in one of those insane warehouse deals with a bunch of steel stuff, heavy ropes and people screaming to “Fight the pain.”
He was doing what he was told by a person who he believed was a “fitness professional”. WRONG. The person was a professional number counter and motivational screamer. The person had no clue about body mechanics, movement or form and therefore didn’t recognize the damage that was occurring and just yelled, “Fight the pain.”
Last night, I read a piece of advice, that I don’t necessarily disagree with about a simple nutrition tip. I agree with it in principle, but when I asked the writer why, he couldn’t support his own advice. Right advice, but NO IDEA why he was giving it. That indicates to me, he read it somewhere and thought, “Hey, this will make me look smart to my followers.” Again, someone who claims to be a fitness professional but has more interesting in sounding good than taking care not to cause harm.
Come on people! Would you have your accounting done by a 6th grade math student? Its just addition and subtraction, so hand over your books to little Johnny. Or maybe there is way more behind the scenes information to get you what you really need. Maybe an accountant would be better.
Fitness professionals dedicate their lives to your benefit. Fitness professionals make your health their priority. Most of us know what we are talking about and will customize plans right for you and not just throw out a blanket statement, “You should never eat XYZ because you’ll get gas.”
Come on… seriously?
Fitness professionals study fitness, health, body mechanics and movement well beyond formal schooling. They consider it a mandatory course of action to help protect you.
Professional number counters take a weekend to get a piece of paper that says, “I’m a certified personal trainer.” Sorry, no you aren’t. You are a number counter that has an obligation to your employer to try to get people to pay out money and hope they never show up.
Please, be careful. Make sure you are with a qualified professional. Don’t just do fad workouts because they look cool. Not all works outs, not all diets and not all bodies respond to the same things in the same way.
To my fellow fitness professionals, thank you for knowing your craft and keep up the great work!! To the number counters. Please know your limitations and help people where you can, don’t hurt them.

What affects how you feel? How many times per day do you let silly things affect your mood/happiness? I’ll be honest, I’m a worrier.
I sweat the small stuff, mind you I like sweating
I have always been a worrier and I have actively tried to change it. I think I’m better now than I used to be but I consider it part of my DNA.
Do I like it…heck no! Would I like to be relaxed and have things easy peasy all of the time…heck yes. Would I love to be able to say, “No worries mahn. Evryting will be awlright.”
When you allow all the external things that you really have no ability to control to affect your mood, you are living reactively. Trust me, I know.
This list could go on and on… these are all things that we have ZERO CONTROL or at the very least, very little control over.
Lack of control can cause depression, unhappiness, and anxiety.
Allowing yourself to focus on these external factors that you can’t control is a one way ticket to being miserable, pessimistic, and negative. We all know people who are just plain unhappy and we all wish that we would never want to be like them. For some they wear their unhappiness as a badge of honor or its written all over their face. You know the ones, you make eye contact for a split second to long, they let you know how they are feeling and how bad their world is.
My suggestion to those people and the reminder I give myself is simple…concentrate on the things that YOU CAN CONTROL!! Those things like:
Do you happen to notice the word “YOUR” in front of everything? It’s because these are things that are directly in your control. All you have to do is re-claim YOUR POWER over YOUR LIFE.
Stop being a victim of circumstance.
Make a list of all the things you can control right now. Once the list is finished, take a few minutes and plan out how each one of those things will be accomplished and or impacted by your control on a daily basis.
Prioritize those things that are most important to you and dedicate specific time to them with positive steps and actions.
Now you have a PLAN! You have a step-by-step, paint-by-numbers process to achieve your goals.
A huge bonus to taking full control of the things that you can control is a happier and more satisfying life. You’ll find, as I have, that those things that you can’t control don’t bother you as much and they fade away. Focus on the positive and the negative isn’t as noticeable. It’s a win-win for your attitude and even a bigger win-win for your health!
The damage that is done to your body by stress that unnecessary worry and uncontrollable worry creates shorten your life and deteriorate the quality of your life!
Take control of your life and your happiness!
Don’t just take my word for it, watch this…
I want you to memorize these letters FTDI. This might be the most important code you remember. Let’s start chanting FTDI, FTDI, FTDI, FTDI* I will be using them throughout this blog post. So what is FTDI…drumroll please….
FOLLOW THE DAMN INSTRUCTIONS
If you want something in life, you will do whatever it takes to achieve it. After my twins were born, I remember waking up an hour earlier everyday to prepare my food. An hour earlier on limited sleep was a big deal. No one on the planet was going to stop me from my goal of losing the pregnancy weight. Talk to anyone with a goal or who makes their health a priority and they will not make excuses for not eating healthy.
Part of eating healthy is consuming a nutritious breakfast. No one has to eat breakfast if they don’t want to, however, don’t complain when you’re not getting the results you want because you’re the one not following the formula. FTDI
To keep it simple let’s use this equation…
1 + 1 = 2. We all know this right? So then why ask if you can change the 1 for a 3 then expect it to still equal 2? We all know that’s impossible. So, just stick the rules!!
Don’t change an equation and expect the result not to change. If you want to change the ‘equation’ that’s fine, but realize that won’t get the same result. FTDI
People have to learn, they can’t take the bits they like and leave the rest. They must accept the laws that govern the human body.
There is a scientific way of getting people into shape and eating a wholesome breakfast in the morning is part of the equation. If you take that out of the equation you’re not going to get the results that you want, simple. FTDI
So when you tell me, ‘I can’t eat breakfast’ I’ll put it back on you. I will tell you, “You’re not going to get the results you are expecting.”
You might be able to make some change, but not the change you were dreaming of. If you are serious about what you want, don’t fall into delusional habits that will leave you frustrated. FTDI .
Your actions and behaviours must match the result they are intending.
Just FOLLOW THE DAMN INSTRUCTIONS.

For a long time I have been an advocate of healthier eating and exercise as a better way of life. Not just for people who are overweight, but also for those who are struggling daily to maintain the weight they already have.
I haven’t been alone in my advocacy…far from it. There are thousands of people who are just like me that spend countless hours trying to help others. The problem is that all of us combined don’t have the money or the voice that a “food” product company with the weight of a multi-million dollar Madison Avenue advertising agency can put together.
Even governments are often against the voice of health advocacy at times by providing unbelievable benefits to “food” processors while leaving farmers and natural food producers out in the cold fighting to make a go of it against big corporations.
So, I can’t tell you how happy I was to see the Ontario Medical Association come out swinging…FINALLY against it all. Yes, finally. No one knows better the impact of an obese society than the medical profession. Diabetes, heart attack, cancers, kidney disease, liver failure… can all be tracked to obesity and nutritional deficiencies.
Today, they delivered their opinion and hopefully governments will listen. Who knows, they might actually listen since the OMA said the magic words… a new tax!!!! Tax crappy food and reduce the tax on healthy foods! THAT IS A MASSIVE WIN-WIN.
“We are raising a generation of children that will suffer from devastating and wholly preventable diseases, overwhelm the health system, and die prematurely. We need immediate and strong legal action to address what Ontario’s doctors are now seeing in the diabetes clinics and the stroke centers, and on the operating table: a full-scale public health crisis.”
“The time for gentle admonitions has come and gone. We need to fight this problem with proven tools like tax incentives and graphic warnings. There is an enormous body of evidence that these measures work.”
Dr. Doug Weir
President
Ontario Medical Association
Dr. Weir didn’t sugar coat this and he sure didn’t pussy foot around the issue. It is a “full scale public-health crisis.”
All our tax dollars collectively are funding a 2.2 Billion to 2.5 Billion dollar epidemic that can be fixed. I don’t know about you but I think that funneling that money to things like education, social programs, infrastructure or any number of other big-ticket tax items would do all of society much more good than combatting preventable diseases.
Highlights of the OMA’s suggestions are:
The recommendations put forward today build on the actions Ontario’s doctors have already called for including:
This is a chance for all of you to show your support for the OMA and their common sense suggestions. Let your MPP know that you support the OMA and want to see real changes before it’s too late!

The wind down to the end of summer has officially started (inserted sobbing here). I know for many people who the beginning of summer turns into a free for all. Decadent food, late nights, entertaining, skipping workouts, and on and on. Then lo and behold it is the fall and your pants don’t fit.
Being healthy and fit is a journey…peaks and valleys. If you read my blog regularly you know that I have cracked the weight loss code. Yes, I cracked the. It’s this real complex formula of eating real food and exercising on a consistent basis. Taaa-daaaa!!
I have found that for me to have an awesome day there are a few things that have to come together. If you put these 6 tactics into play, I bet that you will feel incredible.
Here they are:
1. Real food: veggies, fruit, lean protein, healthy fats. No boxed or processed food. This one is a deal breaker. You CANNOT out train a bad diet. You will feel soooo much better when you are nourished. I beg of you to stop making lame excuses why you can’t eat healthy…that’s getting old! Food can either harm or heal….you choose!
2. Exercise: you knew this one was coming, as if this wouldn’t be on the list! Exercise affects your mind, you all know that you get a bit squirrely when you don’t workout. Body…well, that’s easy, your body feels it and reacts *cough* tight pants *cough* Spirit you are in a much better spirit when you are not constantly worrying about those tight pants.
3. Sleep: we all need 7-ish hours, (I’m still working on this one) but I know that when I do get a good nights sleep that I can take on the world. During sleep your body repairs and recovers itself. It needs that time to do allow to be your best, so off to bed early ok!
4. Downtime: this goes with point #3 – everyone needs downtime. Time to regroup. Sitting in front of the tv is not downtime!! Unwind with a book or hit the hay early. When time allows for it, I love finding a quiet spot in the house and closing my eyes for 20 minutes. Cat naps are amazing!
5. Attitude: Your attitude affects everything, cup half full kind of thinking. If you start your day with a bad attitude good luck turning it around. Have an attitude of gratitude, be thankful for what you have and where you are in life–it could always be worse! Focus on what works, not what doesn’t. Life can be exciting…but that’s up to you!
6. Supplements: Yes, supplements…simmer down. I rely on my boot camp protein powder to help with recovery and provide energy. I also take vitamin C and Omega 3. No supplement is a solution or magic pill…it is to aid with your current healthy lifestyle…thus why it’s called supplement… not replacement.
There you have it… 6 things that you know you should do, now start. Implement a few of these strategies and take note of how you feel and get back to me with your results!
The best news of all is YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE HOW YOU FEEL AND LOOK!!!
If you have any strategies that you use, please let us know and leave a comment below!!!
World Cup soccer has fans going crazy cheering for their favourite teams and their home countries. Look at the four remaining and what they bring “to the table”.
Now, it’s only Tuesday but I have heard of 2 new diets already this week. Yes two!
One was the Nordic diet and the other was the Swedish diet. Both have some valid points, but don’t they all? I think its funny how self-proclaimed experts are creating these international diets.
First, everyone was crazy for the French diet and how French woman don’t get fat…..ummm, yes they do–obesity crosses all international borders.
Then the Mediterranean diet came into popularity….Japanese diet, everyone started guzzling green tea. I actually laugh out loud when I see these books come out and the author totes it as “secrets”.
There is no mystery as to why populations are overweight just as it is no mystery on how to fix it. Following a diet that is specific to geographic lines on a map is just silly.
Now…I might actually follow the Swedish diet if it would make me taller and blonder.
It is the foods we eat, how much we eat and how much we move that makes the difference in our waist line…not our proximity to the international date line! Tadaaaaa!
Maybe I should be starting something here. I’ve got it, I am starting the Canadian Diet or the Can-eh-dian diet (oohh that was clever) …
- you must eat pea meal bacon once a day and all of the foods you eat need to be red or white to make it authentically Canadian and have maple syrup poured over it.
Then I will pay some Canadian celebrity an obscene amount of money to say that they tried it and it works. I will put a little tiny disclaimer at the bottom of all the advertising that says, “Results may vary”. Sounds kind of familiar, like every other fad diet out there. You see how these crap diets work? There’s a formula to them making money, not success for you.
Now I have been called a few things over the years, but I’m adding “fitness magician” to my bio. There is some special magic in eating real food, in the right portions and exercising. Or maybe I should be the “fitness detective“. I’ve solved the mystery of being overweight….shazam!
Let’s keep it real people. If you are struggling with your weight, you know why.
If you would like to add some international cuisine to your diet, then have at it!
But I beg of you to stop falling prey to these marketing scams otherwise known as diet books.
Any “new” diet fad is nothing more than a fantasy. It is all the same old stuff that doesn’t work, with new packaging, a new celebrity endorsement and a new marketing angle to make you think this is the next greatest thing.
Here is the next greatest thing. Eat for proper nutrition and get moving.

We had a great class last night!
We had stations set up throughout the school.
We used every bit of space that we could.
We were side shuffling/jack squatting in one particular hallway where there was a poster about having an “Attitude of Gratitude.” After seeing that poster, I was a tyrant!! Do you thing there was one excuse I was taking from the Boot Campers after seeing that? Not a chance!
Back at Thanksgiving, I talked about having an attitude for gratitude but it really needs to be a daily message to yourself, your kids, your co-workers. We have so much to be grateful for.
I said to the boot campers while they were jack squatting, “Be thankful that you are strong enough to attend boot camp. Be grateful that you have a healthy body and are working towards an even healthier body!!”
So many people can’t do a jack squat or a push up or a lunge and we do it! (Actually depending on the night, we do a lot of ‘em!)
We all know people who are suffering from some health condition like diabetes, asthma, heart disease or just being over weight and not physically able to exercise at the capacity in which you should. Being over weight speeds up bad health issues. It makes everything worse, including your attitude!!!
How many people do you know that are suffering from some kind of sickness/illness. How many of those diseases could’ve been avoided if they would’ve taken care of their health?
When I say that I am proud of my Boot Campers, I mean it!! They show up each night and work hard. They invest their time to take care of their health so they can increase their odds of living long happy lives with their families.
Don’t be one of those people who does nothing about their health until there is a crisis. Be proactive not reactive, because one day delayed, could be one day too late.
I see people take better care of their cars then they do of their bodies and health. I see people work 18 hours a day or running around to every practice and activity while neglecting their health. One day they “wake up”, 30lbs over weight with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Be grateful that you are in good health. Adjust your attitude towards eating right and exercise. Good, real food and exercise is a reward not a punishment.
You have a long life to live. Don’t you want to do it pain-free and full of energy? Start each day being thankful you are waking up and able to take on the day. A great attitude is contagious–pay it forward!
Need a real adjustment? Check out this Attitude of Gratitude example.

I will start this post by saying that if you aren’t up for a dose of truth and reality then you should probably close this page now and not read any further.
I was on vacation last week with my family and I have to tell you about our experience at a restaurant one night when we were out for dinner. Actually there were two incidents that happened that night that left me stunned and enraged.
First, there was a family seated at the table next to us and the kids were wild! Screaming, running around standing on their chairs, feet on the table…it was madness. Now, as a parent I do understand that eating out can be a challenge…but that’s where parenting comes in to play.
As a parent it is your job to teach right from wrong…at the very least maybe give a good healthy, “Stop it!” As these kids were getting more and more out of control the mom, who up to this point was doing her best to completely ignore her children, pulled out a portable dvd player from her purse and plopped it in front of these kids to quiet them. The food hadn’t even hit the table yet! From there they went into a trance. The food came but they didn’t eat or drink and barely blinked.
I am guessing that it is likely a part of their normal routine–plop the kids in front of the magic baby sitter (aka TV) to eat a meal. Who carries a portable dvd in their purse??? What has this family taught their kids?
Responsible parenting is tough. It’s pretty much the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done.
The second incident that night stared a family that came into the restaurant with their little darlings in tow and in hand, a big bag from a fast food restaurant that starts with Mc. OMG, really?
You are going to eat at a great restaurant with an incredible variety of healthy options but, you are bringing in junk food for the kids, how absolutely awful. I listened as the mother explained to the waiter that the kids just wouldn’t eat anything but that faux food. My thought…wow, you have failed as a parent. (My husband even took the opportunity to Tweet out the #fail). You have taught them that it is ok not to eat healthy food. You have laid the foundation for a lifetime of excuses, bad habits, potential health problems…way to go.
Again, parenting is tough and yes there will be times that kids don’t want to eat but if you give them fries, pop (soda for my American friends) and fried food as the alternative you are giving them a death sentence. How are you going to feel when you child is diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes? How are you going to help you kids cope when they become obese? What favours are you doing for them by going to the drive thru for those fries??
It’s lazy. Yup, I said it. You aren’t up for the potential melt down? You want to let the little ones control the menu options? Just spineless enough to let them get what they want as opposed to what they need? Toughen up as the parent, its a life or death matter. Trust me, as a former obese kid/teen it was awful and it still stays with me.
I get emails and comments from people each and everyday from clients and friends telling me, “I don’t like that healthy food”, “salad is boring”, “just a little cheat is OK right?” I could write a book on lame excuses.
So is it exciting and fulfilling to be overweight or unhappy with how you look/feel? How fabulous do you feel when you can’t fit into your pants? When you are huffing and puffing because you had to walk a flight of stairs, is that exciting? Suffering from lower body joint pain because the stress your knees, hips and ankles are under supporting extra weight….that has to be a good time, right???
You have to eat real food and you have to take that 10 minutes to make it. Is that so overwhelming??? puh-lease???
Excuses for not eating properly will give you obesity, knee pain, back pain, health issues (diabetes, high cholesterol, and on and on).
So when you eat that sleeve of cookies or have that cake or drive thru for your dinner think about it. What are you doing? Why would you self inflict this on yourself or your family?
What do you want to teach your children? That it’s ok to eat like crap? It’s ok to ignore your kids and let the electronics watch over them? Don’t make healthy choices…make convenient ones?
Or do you want to teach your children healthy choices for life. That you care enough for them to make tough choices for their benefit. That they are the most important people on earth and you want them to be great adults? Remember, you are not raising children, you are creating responsible adults.
Agree or disagree? Let me know your thoughts. Even, add some of your strategies for healthier kids, parenting skills, tips and tricks. Love to know what you think!
